Talk to me about deaf dogs...

Hubby and I are adopting a deaf dog. She's been deaf her whole life and is very well adjusted (from what I've been told). Very confident, does not startle easily, and is just a lover.

She does know some hand signals, but I'd like to work with her on learning a few more.

I've already ordered a collar that says "I'm Deaf!" on it and of course she's chipped. We don't intend to EVER let her off leash.

Is there anything else I should know or do?

I'm so excited!!!

Thanks! She's pretty much perfect but has been in foster care for a year because no one wants a deaf dog? So dumb!

I can't wait until we can pick her up!

  • Good for you (and her) for adopting a deaf dog! I worked with a deaf dog a little when I volunteered at a shelter but don't have much experience. I found she was just as easy to train as hearing dogs because I always train first by hand signal and then incorporate a word. Good luck and hopefully others will chime in with advice.
