Mandy is driving me crazy - yeast and body odor related long

I'm back for a third time about Mandy's smell and now another ear problem. First I don't know if it is mites of just a yeast infection in the ear, but the symptoms of both seem simaler. On ear is oozing yellow stuff, smells, is red on the outside and scabbing or flaky skin. The other ear just has dried gunk in it no ooze and smells.

As for the rest  of her body a day after I bath her she smells like fritos. It is still moist feeling on her undercarriage especially after she gets up from laying down. I feed her Taste of the Wild high prairie formula. Treats are Stella and chewy chicken and she only gets one a day.

I have now read about doing a supplement of  ACIDOPHILUS capsule. Has anyone had any luck with this in a yeasty dog? Also she is 15 pds do I'm not sure on the dosage. I'm tired of going to the vet because they only suppress the symptoms and charge me $40 a pop to do nothing. Any advice is welcome

  • I'd be interested in any answers as well. Our lab is everything you described and she is a mess. Nothing has helped, she eats raw.

She did not do well on TOTW or any food w/ potatoes or sweet potatoes in it. It seemed to make her ears worse, although they are not much better on a raw diet.

  • Sounds like skin issues that are perfect for a trip to the dermatologist. Do you have one near you? If there is a VCA animal hospital near you they probably have one on staff.

It could be mites, but if her ear is infected and oozing yellow she needs antibiotics whether you feel like going to the vet or not.

I know it sucks, but try a different vet if this one isn't helping.

  • I called the vet today and they gave me Otomax which is what they prescribed last summer. It worked and I guess it is not for mites just yeast. So that means they did not see mites last time I took her. They prescribed it again without an office visit so that was great we shall see if it helps her again.

As far as Taste of the Wild goes when I had her on High Prarie the first time she did awesome. So I thought I would try another formula and switched to Wetlands. Now I am in the process of transitioning back.

  • My dog had a yeast infection when he was younger. We tried to cure it naturally first with an apple cider vinegar bath.  Just wet him then let him dry out in it and we gave him PB8 probiotics.

It worked for a while then it came back so the vet prescribed cephalexin and the yeast never came back.

His skin did break out again and over some time changing his food up (he's on all raw) we found out he's allergic to chicken.

  • Personally, I would go ahead and just have allergy testing done.  She must be miserable and if you're only treating symptoms it will cost you less in the long run.

I would definitely cut all food with lamb, chicken and beef, including chicken fat, not just grains.  The only food that works for our allergic dog is Natural balance duck and potato, bison and potato, and venison and potato.  Are you doing any topical sprays?  any allergy medications?

we also use zyrtec, spray with gentaved for infected skin when he chews hot spots, and bathe him in a free and clear puppy shampoo with no oatmeal.  He gets wiped down when he goes outside, especially his paws.
