What to wear to a gala?

I've been invited to attend a Gala tomorrow night, and I literally have no idea what to wear!  Most of the dresses in my closet are more for work, so I'm not sure if they're nice enough?  If I do have to buy something, I don't want to spend much, as this is something I'll probably just wear once.  Can anyone help me?  I'm hitting desperation mode since it's tomorrow

Does the invitation specify that it is black tie?  Usually galas are, but just want to confirm.

It does not - I was told by someone else that's going my husband can just wear a typical suit and tie

Okay, well that makes it easier, you can wear a cocktail dress.  What is your budget and what stores are near you since you can't order online?

I'd like to stay around $50 if possible.

I live right by a mall, that has a Sears, JC Penney, Macy's in it.

I do have a black, sleeveless tea length dress too that I wore in my sister's wedding a couple of years ago, I *think* I could make it work - but all I have is cardigans, I'm guessing that wouldn't be dressy enough.  Maybe a shawl or something?  Because It's sleeveless, I wouldn't want to wear it by itself.

I would suggest going to the mall and looking for a cocktail dress.  Here are some options, but it's hard since I don't know your style, body type, etc.
