All the best job advice I've seen is that you should tailor your resume to the job you are applying for, as well as your cover letter (and had a light bulb moment today after asking a similar q. on ML that this helps the computer-resume-reader programs find the keywords they are programmed to find, aha!).
I am applying to a large, international corporation and there are three jobs in my local office that would be fitting for me to apply. All advice received so far is that I should apply to each job individually and not assume that if I'm not deemed qualified for the higher level job that they'll automatically kick my resume down to the lower level job.
However, the company website careers section makes you register with your profile, resume, and cover letter; only then can you apply for jobs. It does not allow for edits based on individual submissions (clicking "apply"). I've tried to edit my profile and then hit apply but I don't know if this is just confusing things and that whenever an actual human looks at my chitt all they'll have in hand is the latest submission of the cover letter and the resume.

i would apply to all 3 of the jobs with the same resume and then contact the hr rep (if you can get a direct email that is best, if not send it to the generic one) and attach 3 separate resumes/cover letters. make sure you label the 3 sets with the job that they are specificly designed to match the needed quals.
do you have any contacts in the company? i always forward the resume to people i know in the company too and have them do the hr/recruiting thing. they are much more likely to help you, especially if they get a hiring bonus. i love a good hiring bonus.
