Sorry for this drive by question. I'm dog sitting this week, and I've always spayed my dogs as soon as they were eligible so I know nothing about this.
Apparently, the dog I've been watching is 2 and not spayed. I didn't realize that, but I called her owner to ask if I should call the vet b/c she's been dripping blood, and he said that she's 2, not spayed (he's just been too lazy), and has not gone into heat before. At first it was just literally a spot by the door when I came home, so I thought she had chewed her nails when I was gone or something. But now it's more, and it is definitely vaginal.
Is there anything I'm supposed to do? Obviously, I'll keep her away from the dog park, and I already keep her on a 4ft lead. Will she eventually start with period amounts of blood? I don't mind cleaning up a few spots here and there, but I do have very light carpeting. Thanks for any tips.
Re: dogs in heat
They make doggie diapers for this type of thing. I'd probably pick some up, though I've never had to deal with it personally.
And tell you friend that he's not being "lazy;" he's being irresponsible. Tell him to make an appt, take the dog to the vet, and fork over the cash to get her taken care of! :P

My friend is a doctor; he has no excuse!
On the phone he was all, yeah, I know I need to get that done. Just never got around to it.
I don't get it.
I would honestly offer to arrange the whole thing for him, pick up and drop off, and he can pay the bill. You'll be doing your friend, the dog, and society a favor.
Definitely check out the doggie diapers. they do make products for this. Cleaning up after a dog in heat is no fun.
Tell him the longer he waits, the more stressful it is for the dog (anesthesia, etc) and how it's just plain irresponsible!
Not to mention the medical issues (like cancer) that unspayed dogs can get.
I would definitely look into diapers and be sure to keep her under your control at all times.
My first concern though would be that this is her first heat and she is two years old. That is not common (assuming he is sure that she has not have previous heat cycles). Some b*tch cycles are longer than others but being 2 without ever having a cycle is not the norm so he should discuss that with his vet.
Very true. And no period amounts of blood. Some dogs are very clean. Some aren't. My bit(h is and unless you saw the swelling and caught her cleaning herself you'd never know.
Peroxide used in a spray bottle will remove the blood. Spray on, let sit until the color is gone, then blot up with a paper towel.
Cancer sucks.
