Lake Como

We are in the early stages of planning a trip to Lake Como for August and welcome any advice- what are your favorite towns to stay in? Any suggested activities or restaurants?

For background, my DH, DD (2 years old) and I will be meeting our friends who are married without children for the weekend. Our friends are meeting after a few days in Cinque Terre and we will be traveling via train from Geneva (we move to Geneva at end of June).

We enjoy outdoor activities including hiking and also like good wine.

Thanks.

Re: Lake Como

  • We went to Lake Como in October, and this cooking class was the highlight for us.  http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g664196-d1307914-r116028778-Il_Caminetto-Perledo_Lake_Como_Lombardy.html

Afterwards, Moreno drove us to one of the local castles (can't remember the name- sorry), but it had fabulous views.  If you like hiking and outdoor activities then you might really enjoy that.  If you read the trip advisor reviews above, I'm sure someone probably mentions the name of the castle.

As far as where to stay, I personally don't think it really matters because you can easily travel between the different towns by boat.  Most people stay in Bellagio or Varenna though.  We chose Bellagio because we snagged a good deal on a nice hotel room there, but there's more to do in Varenna.  Mostly we just relaxed on our balcony and enjoyed the views :)

eta: You can also do a day trip from Lake Como to Lake Maggiore.  I went to Stresa on my first trip to Italy and loved it!  You could also go to Switzerland for the day, and I believe there's some kind of hiking path between Lake Como and Lake Lugano.

  • Lugano is beautiful. If you don't make it on this trip you should definitely go to the Swiss-Italian part a different time.

Now Nesting from Chicago, IL My nail blog:
  • We stayed in Bellagio and I wouldn't hesitate to go back.  It was magical and the most relaxing part of our Italy tour.  My favorite restaurant there was this small place called Trattoria San Giacomo (sp?).  Perhaps the best meal I've ever had.  You have to go early to get a table as people spend all night enjoying the atmosphere and meal.  Plus, they make a limited amount of each dish, so, they go fast...
  • We also stayed in Bellagio last May and enjoyed it.

A couple of places you might be interested to visit on the lake:
Varenna - one ferry stop away from Bellagio where you can hike to Castello di Vezio.

Lenno - a few ferry stops away from Bellagio where you can hike or take a boat ride to Villa Balbianello.  Here you can tour just the gardens or do a full tour of the house as well.

By far the best gelato we had in Italy was at Gelateria del Borgo in Bellagio (thanks to Rick Steve's recommendation).  We stopped there after dinner every night while in Bellagio, then spent the rest of the trip looking for gelato that good.
