Piriformis... Pain in the butt! Help.

I race tomorrow and everything went great this week health & running wise. Until this morning. I woke up with an incredibly sore, tight piriformis muscle & tight hamstring -- just on the left side. I've had some issues with this in the past, but nothing this sore in about 2 years. I can't even imagine what I did yesterday that may have caused it. I've iced & stretched, and it doesn't seem to hurt worse to run (I just did a few minutes around the yard to see how it felt.) I think I'll be okay -- I've raced decently with piriformis issues in the past. It is just SO frustrating that I've been fine for 12 weeks of training, and now the day before race day this pain comes out of nowhere. Sorry for the whining. :( Also open to any remedies or suggestions.

Re: Piriformis... Pain in the butt! Help.

  • the things that will fix it (active release therapy, massage, etc) are not good to do this close to a race so you are kinda out of luck. I would take ib profin, make the bathroom as steamy as possible (to loosen you up) and stretch, ice, soak in a bath of epson salt, ice again, stretch again, roll around on a tennis ball for awhile.

    good luck!

ps. if you know anyone who can k-tape you, that may help.

  • This is my fear -- that I shouldn't try anything to extreme right before the race. I suppose just hot shower, try to roll it out, and hope like heck it doesn't bother me too much. Thanks ladies.
