Where is the best place to buy tile ?

We are redoing a bathroom - and we decided to go with a contractor instead of doing it ourselves. I think we just don't have the time or the luxury of learning as we go right now - so we are plunking down for a contractor.

We are supposed to buy our own tile. This is our first time, so we don't even really know where to go. Do you just go to home depot or lowes? do you go to smaller retailers? online? we aren't looking for anything super fancy or crazy - just basic but not junky. We can't really afford to go luxury right now... any suggestions?

Re: Where is the best place to buy tile ?

  • Home Depot or Lowes have decent tile if you are just doing something "generic"- They don't have too many specialized tile (like marble selection is very limited versus a tile shop)

Tile Shops that specialize in tile have a lot more options AND they usually have really cool displays of what it will look like. PLUS they are much more knowledgeable.

I would HIGHLY suggest taking pictures of the tile you are considering so you can look back on it when comparing to other stores or even online.

  • I asked my contractor for suggestions, and I'm so glad I did. He told me about an outlet type of place called Floor & Decor -- you can look it up and see if there's a location near you -- which had slightly better quality tile for slightly lower prices than Lowes/HD. (For the record, he said the Lowes/HD ones I had looked at previously were fine, quality-wise.)

So, you might ask the contractor you choose if they have any shops they like.

  • I just went to 2 tile specialty stores and all were soooo unhelpful.  They made it clear they really prefer selling to contractors.  The selection was overwhelming and i had no idea what was the best kind for our job.  So then I went to home depot and lowes but didn't see anything I liked.  Then finally I searched online and it was soooo much easier for me.  I was able to read the ratings and easily search only those highly rated.  People would post pics of the tile job completed which really helped me to.  I am very happy with our choice.
  • We've purchased most of our tile from floor and decor. They have a far better selection then lowes or home depot and the prices are great. We'll frequently buy several boxes of different tiles to see what we like best and have never had trouble returning the rejects.
