Custom drapes/curtains?

Hi ladies, visiting from GP board...I'm looking to get custom drapes made for our bedroom, 3 windows total.  I really love the choices at drapestyle.com and theshadestore.com, but each pair of panels are about 400$ each, yikes.  I'm really loving this fabric from Robert Allen

Does anyone have any recs of online sites that have made quality drapes?  I'm thinking I can buy the fabric and have someone make them at a reasonable price!  Thanks :)image

Re: Custom drapes/curtains?

  • Can you sew at all? If so, drapes are super easy to make. If not, maybe contact a tailor in your area. I had a dress altered a while back and the lady who did it for me was making curtains for someone else. They brought her the fabric and dimensions and she put them together. Judging by what she charged for my dress I bet they were really reasonably priced. Probably no more than $40-50 for basic curtains.
  • If that is $20 per yard fabric, $200 per panel isn't unreasonable.  That's what I've been running in to.  I apparently have expensive taste.  For $10 per yard fabric I've paid about $100 per panel on Etsy.

  • Ask at local fabric stores (they sometimes have cards or lists that they refer from), and just ask around.  You would be surprised how many people know someone who has had custom curtains made or someone who makes them.
  • I had 10 inverted pleat lined pannels made about a year ago (6 double width, 4 single width). I bought the fabric online (fabric.com) for about $800. It was about $1600 for the labor and lining.

I've sewn simple, unlined drapes before and those are fairly easy to do. If you are pleating or lining I'd have someone else do it unless you are a sewing expert.

  • JCPenney home stores do custom drapes too. Maybe try them?

I had custom drapes made. 4 panels, double width, interlined for $1600. So your quote doesn't seem outrageous .

  • We had four panels and two very small Roman shades made.  We paid right at $4,000 (a little over when you factor in hardware and installation).  They are lined.
