U.S. drugstores make me swoon

Even virtual ones. I have a friend coming next week and I am loading up on a drugstore.com order to her house. I can't stop filling my shopping cart with cheap stuff. It's not even that the things aren't available in France (some are), it's that they are radically less expensive in the U.S. Maybe I have a problem?

So, if someone were coming to visit you from the U.S., what drugstore beauty stuff would you be stocking up on?

Re: U.S. drugstores make me swoon

  • CVS and I are great friend's. Between the extra bucks and special promotions they do I've been addicted. Two weeks ago they had a extra buck coupon for $15 off Physicians Formula. I only paid tax on a $15 blush. This week I got Wet n' Wild palettes 2 for $3. They have great color payoff.

I love facial wipes and the good Qtips. That's what I would want the most.

Now Nesting from Chicago, IL My nail blog:
  • Neutrogina products - makeup, face wash, etc.
  • Shampoo and conditioner.  The bottles they sell here in Europe are sooooooo small!  And so pricey for how small they are.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I usually stock up on Advil, Aleve, and Tylenol (they have them in Germany but the packages are smaller and I hate having to ask a pharmacist just to get some Advil!), then on allergy, cold and flu stuff (Tylenol Cold & Flu, Claritin, etc). At least with colds the Germans are all like, "oh, drink tea and take these plant extracts and you'll feel wonderful." Nothing against tea and plant extracts, but when I'm really feeling like crap, I want help from chemistry, not biology.

  • I load up on Thermacare heat wrap thingies. We have them here in Germany, but they are way, way more expensive.
  • I buy vitamins, advil, sudafed, OTC cold meds, Burt's bees lip balm, Avenno tinted moisturizer, single use floss for DH, deordant, toothpaste, mascara, Benadryl, razors, Art of Shaving stuff for DH, etc.

I can get some of that here, but the packages are small or I don't want to go see a pharmacist every time I have a headache.  I usually borrow a friends Costco membership to buy vitamins, Advil, deordant, toothpaste, benadryl, razors, etc. Man I miss Costco!

  • Cold/flu meds, allergy meds and ibuprofen. The rest I buy here (or buy myself at dept stores, all my cosmetics are Clinique, which is a LOT more expensive here, but I don't want to burden others with having to buy/bring that.)

  • Don't get too clicky.  Medicine expires!  We ended up chucking a bunch because it expired (Benadryl, childrens Tylenol only last a year).
  • The only meds I bring back are big packs of allergy meds (bottles of 60 zyrtec? Sounds good to me!) The rest seem to be cheaper here.
  • I know, drugstore.com is irresistible!

Before travelling I stock up on coconut oil, Jason vitamin E oil, Burt's Bees scrub, cleanser, soap and toner, Advil, shampoo and conditioner, Vitamin Code vitamins (I buy them for all my family as well if I'm going to Rome) and Kiss My Face chinese botanical moisturizer, which I love.

  • Definitely OTC medications I can't get here, in big bottles.

But I'd also stock up on flosser tips (I use a Reach access flosser), Ivory and Lever 2000 soap, solid deodorant (apparently Australia has something against solid), and big bottles of cornstarch baby powder.

  • I found Sudafed to be much less expensive in France and I like Paracetamol better than the stuff in the US (they say it's the same as Tylenol, but I don't believe it.  Tylenol never really worked for me).  I really wish I could remember the name of the stuff a pharmacist gave me for a stuffy head/headache combo.  It was heaven.

I would have them bring me vitamins.  Omega3s were just over 1 euro a pill.  I didn't want to be healthy that badly and Hair colour.  Oh I miss the days of $6.00 boxes of colour.

  • Pepto Bismol, Motrin, diaper cream, fever bears, green death Nyquil, Neocitrin, Neosporin, aloe vera gel, pomade and Dr. Scholl's inserts.

    Everything.

Literally, everything I use.  Deodorant, tampons, make-up, OTC meds.  I only resort to the local stuff (ahem, $$$) when absolutely necessary.

ETA: Not toothpaste.  I do partake in the local toothpaste.  I'm trying to think if there's anything else.

  • In Spain medicine is much cheaper so the only thing I usually ask for is nyquil. Everything else I hve already found a suitable substitute -- even found dove stick deoderant so I'm all set! I'll have to start all over figuring that out in Germany now.

  • Excedrin migraine, Day/Nyquil, Crest Whitening strips, Pepto.

Excedrin will be hard to find.  There was a recall of all Excedrin products earlier in the year and they have been pulled from store shelves.  I've been keeping up with it through my Mom.

They have real, live Sudafed in France? With pseudophedrine not whatever the new replacement ingredient is that has replaced pseudophedrine in most cold meds? And I can get it without a prescription?

I feel like the French are ridiculous about prescriptions for everything, even things that are OTC in the U.S. like hydrocortisone and Monistat-type remedies.

  • Excedrin was recalled?  Yipes!  That's like our exclusive headache medicine.  Bleh!

I always stock up on deodorant when I'm home.  This summer, I'm planning on putting together a good children's first aid kit too.

Otherwise, I am ridiculous because I use lots of cleaning supplies from home.  I love Method stainless wipes and Method bathroom wipes.  I also just found those gel toilet bowl cleaner things here, but I have been known to bring back a bunch of boxes of them from the States.  I also have an addiction to Caldrea cleaning products, which are available on drugstore.com, but not exactly drugstore items.

Hmm, it was Sudafed, not Sudafed PE, but it still did the trick.  It was 1.10 for a box of 12.  No Rx needed.  The only other stuff I used to buy was Guaifenesin (the active ingredient in Musinex) also w/o an Rx.

There was an issue with chipped coatings on pills and pills in the wrong bottles -- so for example Excedrin PM in Migraine bottles.  I know Excedrin branded products (and some other OTC medications made by Novartis) were recalled, as were some store brand equivalents that were made third-shift at Novartis plants.  I'm not sure if it was Target, WalMart, or Walgreen's brands that were unaffected.  The recall is a big deal and has some people are wondering if Excedrin will ever be back on the market.

    Where!?!?!

Just found it a while ago at a store in my barrio (a chain store) called Illagar -- Oceano.  But I think they also sell it at Carrefour now too.  I would be reallys hocked if they didn't sell it at Carrefour.  Still, it's the only solid deodorant I've ever found here. And it was my favorite back home so that's awesome!

It's the same here in Germany. I'll never forget the day I had to figure out how to say yeast infection in German ... then repeat those words to a pharmacist. Awesome.

When going to the Chemist, I used Google translate and then typed that into a "memo" on my phone.  Got to the chemist and just handed them my phone.  The "memo" also included my allergies.

I realize a yeast infection is a kind of fungus, but for some reason, hearing a pharmacist confirm I had "champignons," the literal word for mushrooms, in my nether regions, created quite the unpleasant visual for me. I really just wanted to stick to the Latin "candida vaginitis," but the pharmacist wanted to keep saying "champignons."

Same here!  They keep on saying hongos and I just want to call it something else please!

I'll have to find a big Carrefour around here Smile I've resorted to stealing the men's bar deodorant I bought for DH that he doesn't like. I just can't deal with sticky gel pits while getting dressed and running out the door.

  • This cracks me up. Been there, felt the same way. It was probably the hardest thing I ever asked for at the pharmacy - and yes, I wrote down the latin term mentioned earlier in the thread and brought it with me.
