Opinion on a barking dog...

Fourth Anniversary

My neighbors are selling their house (sad days, they're awesome neighbors). I just let the dogs out in the backyard because they wanted out and Ziva started barking. Apparently there was a showing and some people were in the back yard so Ziva started barking at them. Once she did that I called her in and told her she could stay inside if she was going to do that (cuz obviously she understands me lol).

If you were looking at a house would a dog that barked at you while you were outside but wasn't allowed to stay outside doing that be a turn off? I know so many people find barking dogs annoying and while as long as its during the day it doesn't usually bother me I want to make sure I didn't just accidentally sabotage my neighbor's showing.

  • I wouldn't leave your dog out there barking endlessly (which you wouldn't anyway), but it probably doesn't hurt that the new owners, whoever they are, realize there is a dog next door and there might be occasional barking.

Ditto, depends on the person.  I think most normal folks will understand that dogs bark at unusual sights and sounds - likely the showing was not sabatoged and if it was, you probably didn't want those folks as your new neighbors....

  • It totally depends on the person. I'd go play with the dog and forget about the house. Stick out tongue

This exactly. We moved into a townhome about a year ago and one of our neighbors complains when our dog barks. He claims she barks for at least an hour when we leave (we've recorded her many times, it's 10 minutes tops). He complains when she barks at a cat. He complains all the time. If I would have known this was going to be such an issue, we would have definitely considered buying elsewhere. It depends on the person, but if your dog barking is going to be an issue for them, it's definitely better for them to know now than after they move in.

  • Thanks guys. I was kind of thinking that and since I obviously wouldn't leave them out there barking I would hope it wouldn't be an issue. Now the people on the other side of that house that let their mean 3 legged jack russel out all the time.... They might have issues.

  • It wouldn't turn me off at all.  I would actually see it as a plus because I would be glad that the owner was at attentive dog owner and didn't leave her outside to bark endlessly.  Of course not everyone feels that way, but honestly, if there are potential buyers who won't tolerate even one minute of dog barking, you don't want them as neighbors.  I think you should dispatch Ziva every time there's a showing just to scare those people off.  lol.
