Updated with Pics: Anyone know much about antique or MidCentury Modern furniture?

My grandma just passed away and I've been put in charge of selling off just a few things of hers (furniture). She has a table and 4 dining chairs, as well as a buffet and chest that are all the brand American of Martinsville which I know are midcentury modern (and likely worth just a thousand or two for the set). A couple of them have lot numbers (on the buffet and chest) but I don't really know what to do with them. I'm not getting very far with google, but at least I know what brand they are.

She also has 2 lounge chairs in matching fabric and I know they were purchased at the same time and they match the dining set but they don't have visible markings - any idea how I would figure out what those are worth?

Lastly, there are 2 wood chairs that my dad is fairly certain belonged to my great grandmother. We have no idea at all if they are worth anything, but I'd hate to just Goodwill them (or paint them which is likely what I'll do if they aren't antiques) if they are actually antique. I can post a picture if anyone things they might be able to take a guess as to whether or not they are worth keeping/selling. They don't look like anything special, but who knows!

Update:

Link to pics - it's easier to post a link to the PhotoBucket pics: http://s246.photobucket.com/albums/gg108/luv2sing2004/Furniture/

So, we have a drop leaf table with 4 chairs (2 with arms, 2 without), one buffet cabinet, and one chest cabinet. There are markings on the inside of the buffet drawer to tell us that it's the American of Martinsville brand and the chest and buffet have marking on the back but that's it. Then, we also have 2 lounge chairs that I assume are the same brand since they have matching fabric and I know were purchased at the same time, but I can't find any markings to actually confirm that.

These 2 chairs are the ones my dad believes belonged to his grandma which would likely make them 50-100 years old (he thinks he remembers seeing them there as a child, but he could certainly be wrong about that). These have zero markings that I can find that would help me figure it out.

I definitely won't paint the MCM furniture! It's the 2 chairs that might be from my GGma's house that I would paint white if they turned out not to be antiques.

Posting pictures now... had to wait for kiddos to go to bed before I could pull them off the camera.

  • Can somebody make it clicky? I can't get it on my iPad..

Edit: it's a private album and not clicky

Shoot! I can see the album even when logged out of PB so I'm not sure why it looks private on your end. I'm on my iPad too which is why I didn't make it clicky but I'll make it clicky in the morning. :)

  • None of the pieces are in good enough condition to get top dollar for, or are unusual enough for someone to overlook the wear, but you still should be able to get something for them. I would buy the chairs. ;)

What you can get for them depends on the supply and demand in your area.  On our Craigslist, it seems like mcm furniture is either pretty reasonably priced, or super pricey if it is in great condition.

  • The buffet and table are nice pieces. I would try to do a bit of oiling and see if you can get out some of the scratches to make the finish look better. (I actually used the walnut trick on a vintage stereo console and it worked wonders.) I've seen end tables with the 'x' marking on it (our neighbors actually have a set -- one or two of them are the two-tier end tables).

I agree with PP that value depends on the market in your area. I'd check Craigslist (and even eBay and Etsy) to get an idea of price range.
