First dinner w/in-laws :-/

My in-laws (BIL & SIL included.) are coming over next Sunday for the first time since we got married. Actually, now that I think about it, this is the first time they're coming to my(our) apartment ever.

My MIL and SIL aren't my biggest fans to begin with (I'm taking the baby away from them, there are a lot of cultural differences, I'm not who they envisioned DH marrying and so on...it's a joy), so I'm super nervous about what to make. I want to impress them, but at the same time, I know if I take on something too fancy I will crash and burn.

I was thinking making a pot roast. I make a mean pot roast and I think they'll just have to at least kind of like me after that. Would a 2lb pot roast be enough to feed 6 people or should I buy 3 pounds. Or does anyone have any other suggestions for me?!

Re: First dinner w/in-laws :-/

  • I would get the 3 pound...if anything you will have leftovers to either keep or give them to take home (have extra tupperware you don't mind giving away just in case).

    What else are you making?

    Good luck!

  • I've done pot roast, mashed potatoes, vegs for family dinner before and it always seems to be a hit.  I buy about 5 pounds but my family is larger, more like 10 people +

I wouldnt worry about the ILs.  I dont get along with mine at all and I've been married 7 years

  • I would definitely get at least 3lbs, pot roast has a tendency to shrink quite a bit while cooking. Good luck

The 3 lb seems to be the right way to go...I might even go a little bigger. I have a 'running out of food' phobia. :-/

I was thinking instead of putting the potatoes & carrots in the crock pot like I usually do, to do roasted red potatoes and a nice salad. Something simple since it'll be Sunday and I can totally see her giving me greif for doing a big meal on the Sabbath. Sigh. You guys are all right though, I shouldn't let them get to me. Thank heavens we live far enough away that it's slightly inconvenient for them to come over. :)

  • If they *really* don't like you that much, making them a pot roast won't change their minds.

I love the roasted potato idea, with a green vegetable. And a phenomenal dessert.
