NYC ING Marathon

Who all has entered the lottery this year?  Has anyone here ever run it before?  If so, how many times did you have to enter before you "won" the lotto to get in?

Re: NYC ING Marathon

  • I'm in for this year, but not through the lottery - I'm a local so I got in through the 9+1 guaranteed entry program. It's my first marathon overall, not just my first NYC marathon. :)

The lottery really is a crapshoot. If you're from outside the NYC metro area, you may have a better chance of getting in but I've known locals who have been accepted through the lottery on their first try. Also, there are rumors swirling that they might create a 4th start wave (ugh) in order to have more runners, so if the number of lottery entrants remains steady compared to previous years, maybe lottery chances will be better for everyone. And while I don't know too much about them, I know they made some drastic changes to the deferral/lottery process with regards to how many chances you get before you get guaranteed entry, etc.

    Good luck!

  • I ran it last year as my first :)  Instead of choosing the lottery I signed up with the American Cancer Society and fundraised my way in.

I wanted to throw my name in the lottery this year but the price tag of the race deferred me from doing it.  I'd like to get a couple more marathons under my belt before I attempt to tackle NYC again.

It's a truly amazing experience....BUT it's also a major process from getting to the start to being shuffled through the finish chute. It's definitely a race that every marathoner should do at least once :)

I believe they eliminated the guaranteed entry after so many chances entirely.

  • I ran it in 2010, but like marie, I got in with the 9+1 program. If I decide to run NYC in the future, I'll probably do that again. I entered the lottery last year and didn't get accepted. I was also irrationally annoyed that you have to pay a non-refundable application fee to enter the lottery.

Your best shot at running it these days is through a charity team, since they discontinued the practice of a guaranteed entry after three lottery rejections. Shameless plug for Team Livestrong here, I fund raised for their team even though I had an entry already and they're great!

It's a great race though, and I'm so happy it was my first marathon. Such a fun event and well worth the cost.

  • I ran in 2010.

I was selected via lottery on my first entry.

I have a friend who ran it in 2011 and was selected via lottery after her first entry.

as I understand it the chances of this happening are pretty low, but it DOES happen.

This is true. It USED to be that if you entered the lottery three times in a row and weren't picked, you were guaranteed to get in on your fourth year... and that is still in place for folks who entered the lottery in years prior to this one. (So like, if last year was your first time in the lottery and you didn't get picked, and you also don't get picked this year or next year, you're for sure in the race in 2014.) But if this is your first year entering the lottery, there's no more guarantee... even if you enter and get denied 20 times.

So, no more guaranteed entry. EXCEPT for the caveats of running a fast qualifying time, or fundraising, or being a NYC resident and running club member, etc etc etc.

  • I'm entered in the lottery (outside NYC metro area) for this year.  I know the chances are slim, but I really hope I get in!  I know it sounds awful, but I'm really terrible at fundraising, so I decided to take my chances on the lottery (and throw away the $11 entry fee) rather than go with the guaranteed entry and run as a charity runner.
  • I had entered but decided to have my entry withdrawn since I found out I was pregnant. ?I didn't want to be like the woman at Chicago running at 36 weeks pregnant :)?
  • Also, just so you're clear on the lottery odds, I found my email from NYRR about the option to refund my lottery fee if I wanted to withdraw from 2011:

it is anticipated that the percentage of applicants accepted in each of the categories will be between 8% and 12%, but the percentage could be lower.

  • I got rejected from the lotto in 2011 and got my spot from a friend who works for NYRR.  The lottery is just that, a lottery.  Odds are not in your favor, but it can happen.  If you are dying to run it, just sign up for charity and fundraise your way in.  Otherwise, pick a different marathon.  As great as it was, in my opinion, it was totally overrated.

Nope. :( The last year they honored this was entries for the 2010 race. I was bummed thinking that I had gotten into the lottery just in time (entered for the first time for the 2011 race), but realizing I missed it by one year. I'm sure I'll enter again, but decided not to this year so that I could plan to run a CA marathon. I hate the months of waiting and not knowing for NYC.

The odds used to be significantly better though-- as recently as 2009 you had a 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 chance of gaining entry via the lottery.

I realize this, but now that everyone and their mother has "run a marathon" on their bucket list, running is taking off and marathons are filling up more quickly.  Chicago filled up in 6 days.  I forsee a lottery in it's future.
