NPCER - Game of Thrones

O.To.The.M.G - I was telling my H that the Red Woman birthed black magic and he was like "What? That doesn't make any sense." I told him I know it doesn't make any sense, because what I saw didn't make any sense. Anyway, she scares me. I don't think Stannis really understands what he could possibly unleash dealing with this woman.

Tyrion: I love the Dwarf. He's awesome and I love watching him manipulate everyone's dark secrets.

Renly: Too bad he's gonna die. LOL I rather like his commentary.

Dany: Her character has changed quite a bit since being married off by her brother. I adore her. I hope someone takes her under their wings and makes her just as cunning as Tyrion. She's going to need more than dragons to stay alive.

Arya: I wonder if Twyin will recognize he has her in his service. In the preview, he asks if she's from the North, so I wonder how long it will be until he realizes he has Stark's daughter.

How did everyone enjoy the episode?

Re: NPCER - Game of Thrones

  • I really like how this season is moving faster. Its still hard with keeping up with like 50 characters per episode, but my DH is reading the books so he's able to keep me on board.

The Imp is the best. He plays those people around him like fiddles. And WhatintheHELL is with the Woman in Red? She is skeery.

  • The Red Woman is creepy. I turned to H last night and asked, "Did she just give birth to a Dementor?!"
  • When the dementor baby grabbed her freaking leg. What the ever loving eff?

Also, Joffrey managed to get even worse over the course of an episode. I didn't think he could be trumped. Punching sweetheart in the stomach? Making Roz beat the other prostitute. He is so horrible.

I will serious cheer when Joffery is dead. Can't.Stand.That.Mofo.

I don't recall him being that bad in the books.  I mean, the part with Sansa is discussed, but the sadism with the prostitutes... did I just block that out?  I'm realizing that I really skim over parts in the books that are too graphic (like the Tickler and his torture), so then I find myself surprised it's so bad on the show.

I want his head cut off. But torture first. The cut off his dayum head. And Cersei shouldn't get his bones back. Rat B@stard.

Crown of molten gold? Oh wait, skeezy brother took that one already.

Joffrey needs a good smack down. I love that the imp and his guard guy run things though. That guy shut up quick when he was talking smack to Tyrion about 'threatening' the king.

Also, the mom shacking up with the nephew. Seriously is this woman only into blond relatives? Yuck.

  • I don't understand Cersei. She thought she was running shiit and only made it worse. Does she even have a plan to get herself out of this mess. Oh wait, no she doesn't that's why your "little" brother is trying to save your azz.

Yeah I don't remember that in the books at all (ie, part with prostitutes).

But I don't mind them adding it - it definitely enhances the evilness and immaturity of Joffrey.

And I thought that the red woman birthed the demon baby at Storms End to kill the bastard of Robert in the book - but again I read quickly so maybe I got that part confused, too.

Also, the Arya storyline is progressing a little differently than the book. I don't believe she ever served as Twyin Lannister's cupbearer in the book, only Roose Bolton's. First of all, that torture by Vargo Hoat happened in the woods after they were wandering and got caught, which we already mentioned last week that it was changed. when Arya gets brought to Harrenhall they find out that she is a girl and make her into a little scullery mouse/maid. It is later that she becomes a cupbearer, but I won't go into that now because it could contain spoilers.

  • What I like: pumping up Joffrey's evilness, the actor playing Tyrion, the exaggeration of Renly/Loras

What I don't like: the changes in Arya's storyline, the creepiness of Melisandre (she's just over the top)

  • I hate that we have to wait a whole week between episodes.  I am loving this season so far.

When the red woman birthed that thing, my husband looked at me and said "What did she just crap out of herself???"

I  can't wait till Brienne gets more into the story line.  I really like her character in the books, and I can't wait until she becomes more prominent in the series.

Joffery makes me ill.  And I think I may have a little crush on Tyrion.  He is so fun to watch.

See, I do kinda mind that.  I like that the books makes no one is completely good or bad - they are nuanced.  Even in the books you understand Cersei's motivations and I even felt some pity for her later on in the series.

We all get that Joffrey sucks and I don't think it was necessary to add to that to make people happy when he dies.  Plus, it was just so hard to watch.  ETA: I know that is part of why HBO is adding it, but it seems to be a cheap and unnecessary trick, IMO.  There is already way too much focus on whores and whorehouses as it is in comparison with the book - this just seemed like going overboard just to shock the audience.

  • I hate the way they're portraying Margaery.

She was gentle and wise in the books (and innocent?), IMO.  She seems ambitious and pushy in the show, just playing the Game of Thrones.  I don't like it!

Hmmm. Haven't read the books, but I like her character. I don't think she's Cersei ambitious. I find her advice to Renly to be that of guided focus. She seems to keep him from going to far in left field at times.

  • I do feel like there have been various moments where you can almost feel sympathy for Cersei this season. There was a scene where she was thinking about how young she was when she got married and other scenes where you can tell she doesn't know what to do with what Joffery has become. I don't know what it is, but ever since that episode where they killed the possible heirs (like the baby), I never know what to expect on the show regarding violence, since they went there, you know?

Oh really, I liked that they've taken her in this direction. It seems like they're fleshing her out a bit more and making her a more interesting character.

H told me he read that they are eliminating Roose Bolton's character. Which is fine, since I get nervous that there are so many. They already can't fit all of the characters/storylines into each episode, and that will only get worse with time. Ramsey Bolton, obviously, they'll need to keep in, but you don't really need to know his father to know about his character, you know?

Also, yes, Margaery is different, and older (but so it pretty much every other character), but I kind of like it. I don't know if she KNEW that Renly was gay in the books, or if she just played along, but it was hilarious when she was all, "I can get my brother, if you want." I kind of like her.

I HATE Asha/Yara. I like her in the book, hate her in the show. She delivers all of her lines with a smirk.

Margaery is younger in the books but I don't think she is less conniving. Her entire FAMILY is all about how to move forward. That's what they are trying to capture in the show.

  • I was saying to H last night that they made Joffrey so much more sadistic in the show by incorporating the sex stuff--though, that's probably for titillation's sake (hehe...). We also thought they would gloss over the making Arya watch people be tortured in the show, but nope--it's there.

I agree on Margaery being super pretty. I kind of like what they are doing with her character, though they are making it seem as though Renly is just a figurehead who doesn't really want to be king and that she is really running the show (which is cool in its own right).

I need to finish Storm of Swords before next season!

    I am serious...and don't call me Shirley.
  • I haven't seen the second season (no hbo) but have read the first 4 books - are they changing Littlefinger's role a bit, like the first season?  Is Varys still in Tyrion's corner when planning all the intrigue?

All of the characters (the children at least) are younger in the books (Bran was 8; Rickon 4). The author said he felt he made them too young in the books, so they're all about 3-4 years older in the series.

The books never flesh out Margaery--she's never one of the narrators, so everything you learn about her is through the eyes of others. That said, the extent of her participation in the Game of Thrones doesn't become apparent until the last book.

Five I think. Something I read on a blog said the series will end at with book 7. I decided last night I'm going to pick this up for my summer reading. How long are the books? I know it's pretty detailed, so I can't blow through them like my Kendall O'Dell novels.

There are 5--most of them are ~850 pages, except for the 3rd, which is over 1200. My advice? Get a Kindle.

I normally blow through books, and these are taking me forever to get through.  I don't mind, but they are SO detailed, and the names can be confusing, and it is really easy to miss little things. So be prepared for it to be a slow read - it's so worth it though.  The other week on here people were having a discussion about Jon Snow's mother, and I have yet to see any clues about that even though I've been looking for them.

The thing that sucks about an e-reader (I have a Kindle) is that there's a chart/family tree spreadsheet of sorts at the back of each book - but you can't just flip to it with an e-reader.
