I am on the hunt for a new vacuum. I have a small dog and hardwood/area rugs and have no clue what I am looking. Which vacuum is your fav?

Re: Pet Vacuum

  • I have a sanitare by Electrolux both regular and canister and I LOVE them. The canister I awesome fr hard wood and you could make it work on area rugs but I prefer the stand up for all rugs. And I have a lab and a gsp/jack russel mix that she'd like crazy

  • Dyson.  Our dog is a heavy shedder and we keep him indoors.  We have all tile with rugs and some carpeted rooms and my parents and IL's have all hardwood floors.  We all have a Dyson...actually MIL has 2 lol.
  • We just bought a Shark Navigator Professional...

LOVE it! It picks up everything. We are 80% carpet, 20% hard wood/tile. It has a nice tile/hardwood attachment that I'm loving!

It was $188 at Wal-mart on sale a couple weeks ago

  • We have central vac, but also bought a Roomba.  It is so nice.  It runs every day while we're at work and has made a huge difference in the amount of dog hair in our house.  It does have to be emptied after each use, and can't do stairs, but we love it!
  • I think it depends on your budget.  We have hardwood, tile, and carpet and I was not impressed by many vacuums on all of those surfaces.  Usually one is good in a a specific type of flooring but not good overall.  I spent a lot of time researching and going to vacuum stores and my favorite for our house was a Miele canister, especially because it has amazing filtration and it really picks up well.  I personally was not impressed by Dysons and found that Miele and Sebo uprights were better, but that they did not do as well on the hard floors as they did on carpet so I preferred a canister for our house.

  • I really dislike my Dyson.  Especially on hard floors (stuff goes everywhere - it does not have great suction on hard floors.)

I'd personally go with a canister if you've got hardwoods.

  • We have a hoover wind tunnel anniversary edition vacuum and it works great and is half the cost of a Dyson.  Consumer Reports rates it better in every category except noise I think. (and I don't think our vacuum is unreasonably noisy)  It also has a HEPA filter so its good for a family with allergies.

  • We have a shark navigator. I love it. H brushed our boxer and left the hair in a pile on the floor, grabbed the vacuum and it all came right up. It does great on our tile and carpet. When it rains our yard is a giant mud puddle, so even after wiping their paws, I still get doggy prints. When it dries, the dirt comes up no problem at all.
