An egg question

I have worked with a personal training gym and a CrossFit box in the past year, and both have different ideas about food. The gym was more about clean eating, and whole-grain carbs in moderation were okay. They were big fans of eggs, but recommended having just the whites if we were eating a lot of them. CF, which advises a paleo diet, just put up a post suggesting that, if you're having two eggs, toss out the whites of one and ONLY eat the yolk.

I think I'm sticking with my whole eggs, which I eat about every other day, but what are your thoughts?

Re: An egg question

  • Toss the whites? Never heard that before. I eat whole eggs. Two, every day. The yolk has the majority of the nutrients. There's no good reason to not eat it.
  • I eat the whole egg. I don't eat eggs that often though (maybe once or twice a week), so I'm not really the target audience for that recommendation. But I think if I ate eggs that frequently, I'd still eat the whole thing.

  • I think it depends on your nutrition goals. If you are on a low fat diet or plan on eating a lot of fat in other food throughout the day, skip the yolks. If you need to get some more fat into your diet, egg yolks are great and full of other nutrients. It's also just personal preference - I love hard boiled eggs but hate the taste of hard boiled yolks, so if I'm eating an omlete or something I'll eat the whole thing, but boiled, just the white.

Tossing the yolks is pretty goofy, imo, unless you're trying to pack in an unusual amount of protein and you can't stomach that many calories/fat. People trying to weed out food sensitivities or with immune system issues might want to try omitting egg whites because they're a common allergen. Other than that, I'd eat the whole egg. It's a nice package of fat, protein and micronutrients. I also prefer the two mixed together like in an omelet :)
  • I always eat the whole egg.
  • I eat paleo and I have never heard of this - I eat the whole egg - almost every morning.
  • I eat a whole egg every morning.

  • I am a weirdo who just plain gets grossed out by the yolks, so I always toss mine, but not for any dietary reason, just that they gross me out.  EXCEPT in the form of a deviled egg...mmmm.
  • That sounds pretty strange. I've head of tossing the yolk but not the white. I think if you're going to eat the yolk, you might as well eat the white too because there's not much to it.

Here's a fun fact: Eggs are an excellent breakfast because they contain choline which has been proven to block fat absorption. ;)

I'm not sure why fat-blocking = excellent breakfast, but choline does not "block" fat as in preventing absorption. One of its roles is to facilitate fat and cholesterol transport in/out of the liver.

Here's a good overview with food sources (liver and yolks are highest), daily requirements and other reasons why choline is an essential nutrient:

  • I eat 3 whole omega 3 eggs every day for breakfast. YUM!

I eat at least this every single day.  If I couldn't eat eggs, I would probably starve.  The whole "egg whites only" concept is completely lost on me.

  • I eat the whole thing.  I figure they come packaged that way for a reason.
