Post-run "stomach issues"

So I'm fairly new to running-I (re-)started C25K a couple months ago, and finished week 7 this morning. Before my workouts (generally buttcrack of dawn), I have consistently eaten a whole grain Eggo with some natural PB and a glass of water. This has worked very well for me until Sat, when I had some pretty bad cramping and other "issues" (I'll let you use your imagination) about an hour after I finished. The same thing happened this morning.

Is it silly to 'fuel' to this extent when I'm only running a couple miles? Should I cut out the protein and stick to a banana? Why is this happening now all of a sudden? Help me, Dr. H&F! Smile

Re: Post-run "stomach issues"

  • I never eat before a run that is under 15 miles.  I just don't need it.

However, I've had "issues" after runs of all distances whether I've eaten before or not.  It has more to do with my hydration level than food.

I think I'm going to cut out the PB. It just feels weird to get out without eating anything, although I don't know how much good the carbs do when I head out the door 5 minutes after I finish eating. Lol. It's probably more of a crutch than anything.

Good point about the hydration-I made it a point to drink extra water last night, though, and a glass right after I finished. Hmm.

  • I totally understand! I can't eat anything before I run or it will have me begging for a RR during my run! Try just drinking some water before and then eat afterwards. Each person is different though! Hang in there til you find what works best for you.

Be careful of drinking too much water (or any liquid) immediately before you run. My coach recommends  drinking a glass about 30 minutes before my session because I find it makes me sick to drink and then go out right away....plus I hate feeling like I'm "sloshing".

This.  I had major stomach issues during and after my first half marathon and when I spoke to my doctor about it, he told me to drink SmartWater instead of regular water.  I haven't had stomach issues after runs since.

  • I'd try more electrolyte replacement than food or plain water. I prefer eating beforehand, especially on runs of 3 miles or more, but what I eat and when has gotten pretty predictable over the past five years. It took some experimenting though.
