Half marathon training question

I'm running my first half on May 13th. I've been following a training plan, & feel reasonably well prepared. (I'm nervous, but I think I'd feel that way regardless of my training Wink).  I ran a 15K on St. Patrick's Day, & it went well.

I'm registered for a second half on May 20th (after registering for the one on the 20th, I thought I couldn't make the date work & then registered for the 13th). As it turns out, I can logistically do both.

I'm not particularly worried about speed or timing, & am happy to focus on the first race as my primary race, and then just go out and enjoy the race on May 20th.

If you were in this position (and, pretend that you're a relative beginner like me), what would you do the week between the two races? A few light runs?

Any tips or tricks that you'd recommend for either race?

Re: Half marathon training question

  • wow, that's ambitious! i potentially have a month between two half marathons and i'm already a little anxious about it.  i'm also a relative beginner :)

honestly, i'd get a massage a day or two after the first, do one or two short runs, and rest up.

and then get another massage after the second.

  • Based on how you're legs are feeling after your first half, I'd do a few short runs just to keep your legs loose.

IF I was running my first half, and then running a 2nd a week later, this is what i'd do:

    Mon- rest - stretch/foam roll/ice
tues- something easy - yoga or easy bike ride
    wed - 3-4 mi
    thurs - 3-4 mi
fri - yoga or something easy
    sat - rest
    sun- rest

I don't remember what I felt like after my first half.  But I have run 2 halfs back to back weekends and I just kept the mileage low in the week between.

    This.

I'm actually doing this same thing this weekend, I have a half this sunday then another next sunday, and I just plan to do some easy short runs next week in between.  These will be my 10th and 11th halves though.

    I'd do this.

Also I would be very, very careful of massage in the week in between. It can make you dead legged and take a few days to recover.

I'd go with ice bath on Wed. instead.

I haven't done 2 halves back to back, but I did a half and then a 20 mile training run & my schedule looked similar to this. My runs were a little bit longer, but as far as what type of excercise I did and when, this worked out well. Good luck!

  • Thanks for all of the great ideas! I'm definitely considering the second one more of just a long run, & I'm just going to go by how my legs feel. The second race gives me a chance to visit my sister in Portland & the run just sounds fun. Plus, it's hard to walk away since I already spent the $. ;-)

Anyone else doing the Portland Rock & Roll?

  • Just a heads up--I am used to training with a long run every weekend--12 miles one weekend and 13 the next, with shorter runs during the week.  HOwever, after my actual first half marathon, my legs were COMPLETELY DEAD for a good 4 days.  I felt sore the next two days and just rested.  I got a message 2 days after.  On the 3rd day I tried to run and could not do 2 miles.  Well I could, but I looked like the tin man running for the first time.  It took me 30 minutes to basically power walk the 2 miles.  Slowly after that it was better.  I think the more you race though the more comfortable you are with back to back races.

    Good luck!

  • I did this when I did RnR AZ and Tinkerbell 1/2.....it's do able. Like everyone said I would keep any runs easy, short and rest up for the second 1/2 :)

I will be at the RnR Portland! Do you know the area? I am a SOCal girl so never been there and just wondering about the course?

ETA: I actually meant when I did the WDW Half and then RnR AZ.

I don't actually know! I just checked the course map to see if it was close to the 15K I ran there in March (I'm actually in Seattle, so not as familiar with Portland), but it's a different route. Which is great news, because the 15K route was CRAZY hilly. Portland is a beautiful city, though! If you need restaurant/hotel/etc recommendations, just let me know.

Thanks! I am going to also head out for the Seattle RnR (I have a friend that's running it...) I am more worried about that course but just going to work on strength and getting in some extra hill workSmile
