My career needs a new direction HELP!

My background is in marketing and for 7 years I worked in the field until I was laid off in February 2011. Luck for me I immediately got another job at a start-up collective doing whatever they need me to. Eventually that turned into a FT position with one of the start-ups. I've been their glorified office manager for a year now and although it has its pluses and minuses I feel like I need to make a move. Problem is that I suddenly have no idea what I want to do with my career. I've realized I don't really want to go back into marketing, in fact I'd like to stay as far away from a corporate office job as possible. But beyond that I'm clueless as to what else to do. How do you figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life?

Re: My career needs a new direction HELP!

  • When I was still in school trying to figure out what I wanted to major in (ended up going with PR/advertising) my mom asked me if I could do anything at all, with no restrictions (education, money, nothing else standing in my way), what would it be? It took a little while to answer her and a lot of soul searching, but when I came back to her with an answer she said good, now start at the bottom and put a plan into place and work for it.

I'm no where near where I want to be (I mean, I'm 23 and barely out of college for a year), but I have a good idea of where I want to be career wise and that question gave me a lot to think about.

  • I'm in a similar place where I am trying to figure out what I want to do. I have been working with a career counselor (from my alma mater) to evaluate my skills and interest to help narrow down a different career path. The external insight and guidance has been really helpful.
  • At this point in your career, I think it would be wise to consider getting your MBA. The MBA environment will help foster your career path through education as well as open new doors to companies and industries through networking with other students!
