A Concrete Countertop Lesson Learned List

Thought this would be a good community post... seems like a great discussion starter.  Has anyone else done concrete countertops? How did it go?  Would you do it again?

Concrete Counters

Re: A Concrete Countertop Lesson Learned List

  • This is really helpful. It seems though, that a lot can go wrong with this material (imbalanced, too heavy, etc.) I wonder if by the time you spend all the time to do it and then maybe have to reinforce your cabinets beneath the concrete, if it would just be better to go with a different material altogther (not granite) and get it taken care of by a professional installer.

Has anyone priced out concrete versus non-granite counter top materials?

  • It actually only seems to be extra weight if you make it thicker than granite.  I'm not sure what the density of granite is compared to concrete, but you really need the enforcement if you run up the thickness above 2."

  • I don't want to be rude since you're new, but this really belongs in the "Blog Tuesday" post.

Blog whoring makes me cranky.  Either PIP and write out your text in the post (and I'll go to your blog if I like the post) or put it in the Blog Tuesday post where it belongs.

Agreed.  Blog whoring does not go over well here (well with me and pp at least).  I don't want to go to your blog, read what you've done and then respond back here.  Sorry. If you want to post pictures and type everything out so I don't have to reference your blog like pp said, great.  Simply posting a picture, posting a link your blog and that's it?  No bueno.

  • Wow, I had no idea anyone would think posting a blog is rude.  Original poster....I find your blog a good read!
  • Hmm, which would I rather see.  A link to an actually helpful post about a big DIY job with lots of great pictures?  Or 16 responses about what people have on the back of their toilet?

It seems spam-ish if you've only got a few posts.

OP, if you want to put the text and pics in your post so it's easy to read without having to go to your blog, and put your blog link in your sig (and quit signing your posts), you usually get a better response from the masses.

    LOL!!!

  • Ok, got it.  Understood.  My apologies for the break in etiquette.  Literally my first post, not surprising to me I get in trouble!!  So either write out the entire post (or copy and paste it with pictures and all) or leave out any links completely, right?

Genuinely not intending to be a spammer.  I prefer conversation.  I AM a rule follower.  Is there a Nest etiquette post?  I fear this may not be my first infraction.

Dude, totally not offensive.  My apologies for coming off a little coarse - I've had a lot on my plate lately and it's making me not so nice.

No nest etiquette post or rules.  Just get some posts under your belt, lurk a little, add your $0.02 to other people's posts.  We've just had SO MANY problems with spam, that links by someone with very few posts are highly suspicious.

It'll be nice to have a guy hanging around.  It's been a LONG time since there's been a guy on D&R.

  • Ok, good.  We cool ;)  Probably a good policy anyway.

Its very surprising to me that there is such a wide gender gap on the D&R topic.  Seems like DIYing would be an even playing/posting field.

  • People tend to be suspicious of newbies who seem to just be trying to get blog traffic.   An introduction, along with more pictures and information and not just a link to the blog goes a long way.

On Tuesdays there is always a post just for showing off your latest blog posts and linking to them.  Other days people do post about projects, but not necessarily in a 'read my blog' kind of way.

Welcome.  Your post made me add concrete counters back into consideration.  I had just forgotten about them.

Gem (she has a post below about yellow paint) has a link to her blog in her signature.  Her husband made their concrete counters, and her blog either has a post about them or a link to a post about them.

My husband is pretty into DIYing with me (as long as it's not painting) and actually has a pinterest account.  I think it's just a disconnect with the message board aspect.

Welcome!  It looks like you have a pretty great aesthetic, too!

  • Thanks for the info.  I actually AM very suspicious looking.  ;)

Glad you are reconsidering them, although these countertops went in my mom's vaca home.  We ended up using granite in our first house and are still on laminate in our present home.  We're not sure what we're going to settle on when we replace our laminte in a few years...  still an open discussion.

Ginger is a guy.  He's not around as much lately, but he is in still around.

  • Totally didn't get a spammy impression form this.

Anyway - great post! I pinned it for later, actually.

If you were doing it again, knowing what you know now, would you?

We do most of our own renos and all of our own cosmetic work and concrete counters have been on my husband's list for years.

He's who I was thinking of.  I haven't seen him in forever.

  • Good question...  here are a few things I would suggest.  just my opinion.

1..I would build a solid work table to rest the forms on.  I used a couple of saw horse for my first go round and that was a poor decision.

    2.  I would make the counters 2"-2.5" thick instead of the 1.5."  Go thick or go home.

    3.  I would probably make only rectangles and avoid the corners, although my corners came out fine.

  • The kitchen looks great! Those counters go perfectly with the backsplash. I am definitely not advanced/brave enough to try them (we just took the easy route and got granite) but maybe someday. Kudos to you. Keep the posts coming!

  • Those are gorgeous!  We considered DIY concrete countertops, but ultimately went with butcher block since they were still cheap and a LOT less work.  We would have needed to reinforce the cabinets, creating even more work . I love the look, though!
  • I didn't get spam impression from the post - I think a lot of ppl need to get over themselves.

Great link and info! Thanks for sharing - far more helpful and interesting than half the *** that is considered worthy of it's own post.

  • Oh my word, your kitchen is gorgeous! I love the countertops and I usually never notice things like countertops. What Shore are you near?  My goal is to buy a house at the Shore someday... pref Ocean City.

Mr. Ginger thought he had two weeks until he had to hand in his paper. But negative. Only one more. Time management skills do not run in our family! He misses you too TBM.

Nice! My aunt is building in Cape May. They have been building for 2 years...seriously.

Oh, and yea, go Flyers. My H bleeds orange and black. Our life at times revolves around the Flyers. Thank God they beat the Pens.

  • thanks for the post. DH would really like to do them, but I am definitely more of a quartz girl. it was a good read though :)
  • Hey John, good to hear about a fellow DIY-er that attempted concrete counters. As thebridesmom posted my DH made our kitchen countertops when we first bought our home. I did do some blog posting on it, but my details & pictures aren't great as it was years ago and one of my first blog posts.

We also have the type pf counter that is poured in a melanine mold, and wet sanded. He went with the Buddy Rhodes product and also read and watched the dvd's on concrete counter techniques. He made them 1.5" thick with a 2.5" thick edge overhang.

We love our counters and I would totally have concrete countertops again. My H would make them again, of course.

    here are my posts,

  • Thanks for the links!  Counters came out great!  I had heard of the Buddy Rhodes method, but hadn't seen any finished.  Your kitchen looks great and I have major stove/hood envy.
