Acupuncture

I'm getting acupuncture for the first time tomorrow....Has anybody done it? If you have and you don't mind sharing what reason did you get it, and did it work? Any certain things I should ask?

I thought I was just setting up a consultation, but he booked me a full on appointment, so I went with it. I'm not weird around needles at all so that's good.

I'm getting the approval from my liver doc to TTC next month or June and based on my current charting it doesn't look like it's going to be easy. Since I don't want to be on prednisone forever (had to go on this med for my liver during TTC/pregnancy) So I'm trying acupuncture to help the process. I would also like to sleep better/just in general relax, and if he can help with weight loss that'd be great too!

Thanks!

Re: Acupuncture

  • I did it twice for sleep issues and anxiety.  I don't know that the two sessions helped that much but I would definitely do it again.  It did not hurt and was relaxing.
Happiness is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to cope with it.
  • Had it during IVF cycle, I didn't get pregnant--not a failing of the acupuncture.

The first appt. made me upset; I was on my belly and I felt trapped.  Each visit there after I felt high afterwards, and that high feeling increased each time.

  • LOVE it.  I get a great nap while I'm there.  I have lower back problems and it made a huge difference.
  • LOVE Acupuncture! BUT you have to make sure you commit to having it be a long-term process because just going a "couple of times" is not going to give you the proper benefits.

I did a 6-week session 2 years ago for ongoing acute knee pain and have had barely any issues since. I have also gone in for a few session to do 'maintenance'.

And it really is true that the needles do not hurt! Some points might make you feel weird pressure or a funny tingle but it isn't painful.

    Welcome to Acu-land :)

Definitely don't try to be productive afterwards...you will be in la-la land for a while!

  • I did acupuncture + moxibustion (where they burn herbal sticks close to certain pressure points) to try to get my breech DD2 to turn. It didn't work for that, although it did make her very active, especially after the first session.

It was relaxing, but did bring some odd sensations. Some parts of my body would feel tingly or heavy. And it wasn't 100% pain free -- occasionally I'd have a twinge or pinch as a needle was being inserted. Nothing major, but some slight discomfort. Some locations tended to be pain-free, others were more sensitive.

I thought it was interesting, and I wish it was covered by my insurance so I could try it for things like my migraines, weight loss, stress/anxiety, etc.

  • Wow, I had no clue it would make feel high/la la land! Good thing I'm not working after!!

Thanks for the all the responses...I'm looking forward to going!! Kaiser has a discounts with certain providers, so it's $55 a session. I don't think that's toooo bad considering.
