Decorating Troubles, Can you help?
Husband and I have just moved into our very first real home. We've been married nearly 3 years and we are basically starting with scratch at buying furniture, painting and decorating. My issue is I really don't know what exactly I'm looking for decor wise. I am really drawn to bright colors, fun accents, chandeliers, elegance, and things that are comfy. How on earth do you find a style or decorate when you want things that just don't go together? I'd love a space that is sleek, elegant, sophisticated but that matches my husband and I's laid back, fun loving personalities. Anyone have any advice or suggestions? I'd appreciate it!
Re: Decorating Troubles, Can you help?
I've been in those shoes. I started with the rug to go under my kitchen table. Since the kitchen is the center of my home, I figured every other room could flow off of that one. It worked really well too.
General decorating advice is to find an inspiration piece. It is usually a vase, piece of artwork, a pillow, rug, or something small that you adore for some reason. Then, you build your design and color scheme off of that piece.
It also sounds like you have an eclectic style bent. You can look that up on www.hgtv.com . That's a good place for beginners.
This and walk around furniture stores together to see what you're drawn to.
I usually start with how I want a space to make me feel when I am in it, and I find it easier to have that in mind while I am looking for things for the space.
I like a lot of different styles and like to combine them when I can, so asking myself if a color, an object or piece of furniture helps bring out the look/feel I want helps keep me from getting things that don't work together.
Use houzz.com or pinterest to find images that appeal to you. As you collect more images, you'll notice patterns in what you like. Once you find the patterns, use them as a jumping off point in your own home (blue bedrooms, rustic dining tables, etc).
