Arbor Day Trees?

Has anyone purchased trees from the Arbor Day site?  We need to add quite a few to our lot this year, but don't have a large budget for it.  They seem to have great prices and a good selection for our area (zone 5 - west of Denver).

I would think that the trees would be healthy, but have never bought anything other than seeds online.  I'm obviously more concerned about long-term health (and sound structure) with a tree than a bunch of annual flowers.

    They are TINY.

And I don't think they have a good selection, personally... this is a frequent argument among Arborists.

  • We got a couple blue spruces as a party favor at an Eagle COH last weekend. They are miniscule. I'll probably pot them and transplant if they take next year.

One of my friends has one from a couple years ago; it's about 3 feet tall.

  • NB - Since they're really small, do you think I could put them in a pot for the next year?  I could keep them in the basement over winter since they're small.

1st Q: Yes you could pot them and grow them out for a year (or longer)- I have done this countless times. At any given time I have potted trees growing out in my backyard; eventually I sell them to someone and plant them. I've grown out trees in pots for as long as six years, progressively repotting them in larger and larger pots.

2nd Q: You should keep them outside. They should experience the change of seasons and the normal light/dark cycle. However, for you to do this successfully, you have to use "cold hardy" pots; meaning pots that don't freeze and crack in the winter. Let me know if you need more info on that. You should also have the largest possible volume of soil, which not only facilitates root growth, but more soil holds more water, and more soil insulates the roots from freezing (which is very important in potted plants).
