When did your kid start walking?

I want Layla to stay a baby as long as possible but I'm hoping she starts walking before June.

My arms can't take much more. Really. She's almost 21 lbs and tack on my growing discomfort from the pregnancy, I'm in trouble.

This morning I brought down some diapers and wipes so I can just start changing her downstairs. I'll still have to go upstairs with her here and there still and for naps. Oh she can climb stairs though. A few times I've let her and just walked behind her. Embarrassed

    hi.
  • I think DS was between 10-11 months and DD started a few days before her first bday.  I think it's fine to let her climb the stairs if you're right behind her! Mine were doing that before they were walking, too.

He took his first steps around 10 1/2 months and was full out running by a year.

    16 months.  Super late walker.

  • My oldest DD didn't walk until she was 16 months, she liked being a lump on the floor.  DD#2 was walking by 9 months, child was crawling at 5 months and basically hasn't stopped moving since.

I think it's perfectly fine for you to let her crawl/walk up the stairs if you're right behind her.  You've got to give yourself a break and it's good for her independence.  Just keep a gate or a hawk eye on the stairs so she doesn't try it on her own yet.

  • Right after her first birthday. She crawled and walked in the same month.
  • Emily was just shy of 11 months. Kate was 9 months.

At 11 months, I would totally let my kids crawl up the stairs themselves, with me right behind them, of course.

Mine too. I don't think 14 months is late.

  • My kids started walking within days of turning one.

You will still be picking up and carrying this child long after she starts walking.  Good news is that they don't really put on that much weight relative to the way they grow in the first year.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • So it looks like on average by 13 months.

Yeah I know I'm still going to be picking her up once she's walking I'm just hoping not as much.

  • 18 months and 11 months, respectively. Both were in the range of what is still considered "typical".
  • DD1 was 16 months.  DD2 was right before her first birthday.

  • Caroline was early...about 10 months.

    Evan was about 14 months.

  • D--10 months.

E & J--12 months. --they were walking on their first b-day if I'm remembering correctly.

  • DD was solid walking at 8 months

DS waited until 15 months because his big sister brought him anything he wanted.

    SS10 - SD9 - DD7 - DS5 - DS born 10/3/12
  • C started walking just before 12 months

N started walking around 14 months (LAZY!) lol.

  • Please. The minute this kid starts walking you'll be posting about how your poor pregnant body can't handle chasing her around.

13 months for us, and there was no gradual build-up. One day he was crawling, and the next day all he wanted to do was walk.

I do still carry him a lot though, especially if we're in a hurry. He stops to look at everything, pick up sticks and rocks, feel the sign posts, etc. lol

Lol. You are probably right but I have always had strong legs. I have really bad muscle knots around my shoulder and neck (particularly the right) that radiate pain and make the muscles on my right arm hurt here and there so I'd rather be on my feet than putting weight on my arms.

  • He took his first step at ten months and was fully walking by 11 months. He was really eager to be mobile early on, he's still very physical and less verbal.
