What to wear to a backyard wedding?

My dad is getting married June 14 in his backyard.  It's on a lake and is pretty, but it's still a backyard.  I have no idea what to wear.  It's going to be casual, but I will be the daughter of the groom, so I feel like I should dress up for the occassion.

I'll probably wear wedge sandals as my shoes, but what kind of dress would be appropriate here?  A cute cotton sundress or something nicer?  Any ideas would be great, but Im looking for something under $100.

TIA Smile

Re: What to wear to a backyard wedding?

  • My aunt is getting married.  She rented an outdoor space with a pavilion and wants to keep the event fairly casual.  I bought a Lilly Pulitzer  cotton dress (there are a lot of cute ones out right now).  I think something similar would be appropriate.
  • We have friends getting married next month in a backyard. I am wearing a cotton maxi dress with cute jewelry.

  • Congrats to your dad! I'd probably just stick with a regular sundress. Is there a color scheme you need to be in/avoid? If not Piperlime has a ton of cute dresses right now like this or this or this.

  • I think a sundress would be nice, but I wouldn't go too casual.  Like you said, you are the daughter of the groom.  Plus, regardless of location, it's still a wedding.  Also from Piperlime:

  • DH and I did a backyard reception with an outdoor wedding at our place.  I agree with PP's suggestions.  Most people wore cotton sundresses with nice sandals.  I'd try to stick with a natural fabric to keep from being too hot.  I like J.Crew's Beach Dress.  It can be dressed up or down with accessories and looks great in person.  It's $108, but I'm sure there's a J.Crew code floating around somewhere to get it for less.  It will probably go down before June too.  Also, if it's a daytime wedding you won't have to worry about tan lines from straps.

  • I had a backyard wedding, and my friends wore sundresses and maxi dresses.  Guys work khaki's and polo shirts.

    Congrats to your dad!

PPs have given good advice. I just wanted to add that a pair of radish earrings (dirigible plums to be precise) would look ravishing with any outfit. Smile

I would vote for something like this!  It's cute, summery, and colorful!

I LOVE the fourth dress! So cute...heading to piperlime to check it out. I would definitely wear that to a summer wedding.

I also second a pp about Lilly Pulitzer but it will be tough to find something under $100 unless its on sale.
