Apartment to House transition
We're moving from an apartment to a house this weekend, and I need advice for my dog. Right now, he never barks, except for the occasional happy bark or bark at the door. Inside or on a leash outside, he's fine.
However, whenever we take him to visit friends of family and let him play in the backyard, he barks nonstop as soon as he's let off the leash, whether we're out there with him or not. Since we don't do this on a regular basis, we've never had an opportunity to train him not to do this.
I don't want my new neighbors to hate me, but I want my dog to enjoy our new yard. Any advice?

Re: Apartment to House transition
Once he gets used to the house, the yard, and the neighbors - he'll likely settle down a little.
When we had a fenced in yard, our dog knew exactly who the neighbors were and their typical schedule. If she was outside and they had company over, or various service people, she'd bark non-stop until we brought her in. On a day to day basis though, she only barked occasionally while outside. She kept a good eye out on everything that went on though.
If he doesn't settle in within a couple weeks, then I'd consider other options & training. If it helps, make sure you go outside with him for awhile every time he goes out. That way you're also available to redirect any barking that may occur.
