Birthday Party

We will be having our son's 1st birthday party in June and we are traveling out of state to celebrate it with my family.  We've rented a place to have it that will hold everyone and it has a kitchen.

I am looking for ideas for a menu.  The theme is barnyard, but I was looking for something other than the usual hamburgers and hotdogs and sides.  Any ideas?  There will be about 50 people attending.

Re: Birthday Party

  • I think Pulled BBQ chicken or pork is the easiest way to go for a party.  It doesnt require you to sit behind a grill and can be pre-made and heated up.

You take a bunch of chicken breast or a pork loin and put it in the slow cooker until it shreds.  I usually add a can of Dr Pepper or Orange soda, garlic, Apple Vinegar and BBQ Sauce and cook on low about 8 hours.  They stir and add some more BBQ sauce if needed.  I always set out a spicy and mild BBQ sauce so people can top their own sandwiches with extra. I made 2 decent sized pork loins for my last party of 50 guests and had some leftover.

Good sides are macaroni salad, potato salad, veggies, fruit dish, corn on the kob or Inas Corn Salad.

  • BBQ is the easiest way, you don't have to keep yourself busy with thinking the menu, cooking, and washing the dishes. Oh, as for the dishes, if you don't want to bring about too much pollutants and save money, you could choose biodegradable paper tableware, eg. Shenling biodegradable tableware (http://www.biodegradabletableware.com.cn/).

    Have fun!

  • BBQ - I'm not a fan of attending or having parties where the hosts are tied up in the kitchen/grill the whole time.  You can either have it catered or prepare pulled pork/chicken/etc ahead of time and have it in crockpots.
