Beer of the Month - RECS?

Hi,

I'm over from D&R. I need some input on a Beer of the Month Club. Maybe you can help.

My BIL/SIL and DH and I are going in on a combination Father's Day and Birthday gift for DH's dad.

He likes beer when grilling and in the hot tub, but he isn't a heavy beer drinker and he is certainly not what you'd call a beer snob. But, we thought it would be fun for a beer of the month gift for him.

We don't need to go premium and we aren't looking for something super expensive. Our budget is $40 per couple per special day - so no more than $160-$170 all in. We know this limits our duration to only 3-6 months and that is fine.

Do you have any recs?

Re: Beer of the Month - RECS?

  • I got BF a subscription to the one through Flying Noodle for our anniversary.  It was one of the cheapest ones that I could find, including shipping.  He has been very happy with it so far!  The beers arrive toward the end of the month (he just got April's shipment yesterday), and they come with a little newletter about the selections.
  • I just wanted to suggest that you look into what kind of beers they usually have. DH received a BotM a few years ago and it was cool except for the fact that most beers were ales and stouts, and DH usually drinks beers more like Coors Light.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but isn't this the point of a BotM club? To try things other than light beer? It would be like signing up for a WotM and wondering why they didn't send Beringer White Zin.

  • BOTM Clubs often send you beer that has been sitting around in storage, having not been sold at its peak freshness.

May I suggest this site: www.beerjobber.com they offer sampler cases, etc.  The beer ships directly from the micro-brewery to your home so it is guaranteed fresh.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • Another option could be to visit a good local liquor store and ask them to help you put together an assorted six-pack. You'll probably pay less money and get more quality and variety.

Ratebeer.com can help you find liquor stores in your area, and their message board users rate them so you can see which ones are the best.

Some bars and microbreweries also sell growlers (to-go jugs) of draft beer, so that's another option. You pay for the growler and the fill the first time, then you just keep bringing back the clean growler and they'll re-fill it for you.

I agree, I was just saying to make sure the OP made sure that this would be a good gift for the recipient. We drank some of the pale ales but most of the beers (DH got 4 types/month x 3 of each x 12 months) went to waste or were given to a cousin later down the line.

The whole thing becomes like Ray got Marie the fruit of the month on Everybody Loves Raymond.  It's a good idea, just make sure that the person you're sending it too is open to trying the tastes of the new beers or it's an expensive waste of money.
