Still angry about a margarita

When I was in San Antonio last weekend we asked our boat tour guide which place has the biggest margarita in the city, and he told us.

We went there later, and H ordered a beer and I went to order the 60oz margarita.  The waitress was all "oh, you can't order that, I can only give it to 2 people."  When I asked her why, she was just like "it's 60oz."  Ok, I get that, it says that on the menu.  What it doesn't say is that I have to share it with someone, or give any sort of explaination as to why I cannot have it.  I don't want to share.

Does anyone actually know why they couldn't serve it to me?  Is it a law in texas?

I almost asked if I could order 3 20oz margaritas, but I was annoyed and didn't want to spend any more money there.

Basically, I'm still bummed about missing out on a 60oz margarita :(

Re: Still angry about a margarita

  • That is f*cking obnoxious.  I guarantee you DH would be forced to chug his beer, walk up to the bar with me and get me the damn margarita.  AND we wouldn't have left a tip.  AND we would leave immediately after.  And if they didn't let him order another beer while I was chugging up on that big boy, I would cuss them up one side and down the other on our way out.  I'm super klassy like that, as I'm sure you're all well aware by now.

I'm irritated right this second  on your behalf.  Screw Texas, anyway.

    Shot first, questions later.
  • That's almost a gallon of margarita.  Dayum.
Seriously, people. If your faith in humanity is destroyed because your parents told you there was a Santa Claus and as it turns out there is no Santa Claus, you are an ignorant, hypersensitive cry baby with absolutely zero perspective. - UnderwaterRhymes
  • No it is not a law.  I think they do it to cover their own butts.  If you get hurt or in a car accident because they have overserved you, they are held liable.  Plus most of the restaurants here make the margaritas pretty stout.

  • Totally get your frustration. I, too, would be quite displeased. They need to specify the rules on the menu. Period. But ESPECIALLY if they're going to have their servers enforce said rules w/out a proper explanation or a quality apology. Pffffttt!!!

ok, this kind of makes sense, but they should have written something on the menu, or at least given me a proper explaination.

Honestly I'm mostly mad that I didn't get to take a photo with it.

  • They totally should have had a warning in the menu for you, how annoying.

I think, however, this is actually a law. It wwas years ago when I used to bartend in Texas. As part of the TABC regulations, no one person could have more than 40 oz (it could have been a different number, I don't remember exactly) in front of them at any time. This may be why they cannot serve it to just one person. It's still stupid, though.

    thanks for this!

Now I'm wondering why there wasn't a 40oz (or whatever the max is) margarita on the menu.
