Do you get money from the government? What is it for?
I had a vague idea that some people get dolla dolla bills y'all from the govt, but I thought it was only low-income people, and that they probably had to apply for it?
I guess we're poorer than I thought.
I had an unexplained $113 show up in my bank account on Friday, direct deposit, from Fed-Prov/Terr CANADA.
What the hell is that? (Note: I am not complaining about money mysteriously showing up in my bank account. I'd just like to know what it is for).
I also got a cheque on Monday for $200 for the universal child care benefit. Which was a nice little surprise too. I know now that I'll get that monthly. So the $113 isn't this.
Aaaand I got a letter about a month ago saying something along the lines of "you're not eligible for such and such because your income is too high." I don't remember what the such and such was, and I threw out the letter because, gee thanks for telling me that you're not sending me money that I didn't know that I might possibly be getting anyway.
I'm assuming this is all coming from the paperwork that I signed in the hospital, where I was in such a daze I signed anything they put in front of me and I have no idea what any of it was.
So. What is this monies? Is this something that I can expect monthly? (If so, WAHOO). Is it a mistake that they might be coming for in the next few weeks or so (if so, boo, but let me know so I don't do anything with it).
L has her own bank account already, so if this is baby money I'd like to be able to put it in there for her.
Re: Canadian moms, a money question
The 'you're not eligible for this money' is probably the GST credit, if you're really poor they send you $50 every few months to help with the GST you pay during the year. You have to check a box on your taxes to opt in or out (can't remember which). I used to get it when I was in University.
heehee, cheque.
I'm of no help.
universalchild care benefit is $100/month and i think it goes until they are like, 6? and you got two months worth in one cheque, but here on out, it would be $100 every month.
the $113 is two months worth of the provincial kickback for having a baby. this is based on your income. so, here on out, you should be receiving about $56 per month -- same thing, i think until the child is 5 or 6.
Ok, so the $113 is not GST or UCCB. What isssss itttttt?
ETA: posted this before I saw what Booby wrote. Thanks Booby!
Holla at $56 a month! That should set up quite the little nest egg for L. ha
You're just realizing this now?
Pssssh
Hello, there is like 100 igloos that make up the entire country. We got to make babies!
I need to move to Canada.
Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
LOL, yes. When I got the second kid, I was like "why do they give me 200 now? Did they get confused? oh yeah, right, I have two kids".
England shoves a bunch of money at you once you push out a kid as well...just don't tell them if you move countries b/c then they make you pay it all back :
(it's the child benefit fund...and it's a lot!)
Oh! This is very exciting! Especially when maternity leave pays like sh*t.
Hmmm, my provincial cheque is a lot more than $56... As far as I know, it's not based on my income bc whatever that one was I didn't qualify for it. All told, I bank about $350 a month from the govt. My Dad worked for the Alberta govt. and even though I've lived in B.C for 6 years they still send me money every month, some kind of benefit. Whatever, I'll take it.
I was surprised too when the cheques just started showing up!
you live in a different province than jehaw. so perhaps yours isn't based off your income. perhaps hers isn't either. but in ontario, it is. i get like $34/month.
What's this $34 for Boobs? How do I get that too?
Oh it could be...maybe a new program because they didn't have that back in '09-10. I could have bought coffee with $11!
I get that. B.C is a whole other world of semi socialist awesomeness for sure.
I get zip, zero, squat from Ontario.
You still get UCCB though, right? That's a just a form you fill in and mail and everyone is eligible regardless of income. i thought it was income based and didn't do anything about it for a year with my first kid and they paid me 18 months retroactively. SCORE!
I still get the $100/month, just nothing extra from the province. We didn't get the forms in the hospital (though we left with our MWs 3 hours later), but we completed them when we registered his birth and for his SIN card, etc. online.
