Please help the decorating challenged...

I just got a new house (yay!) but it has white walls and blue carpet. See pic below...

So what color sofa/sectional do I get? Repainting/redoing the floors isn't an option right now.

Re: Please help the decorating challenged...

  • I personally would stay away from darker colors (brown, blues, blacks, etc). and i see you have a DD, so white is probably out of the question. my suggestion would be maybe a tan/beige colored couch. i dont know the dimensions, but i think a sectional would make the room look smaller, but it could just be the angle of the photo.

  • So maybe a sofa and a chair instead? I hate the look of a sofa and a loveseat for some reason.

  • I would also suggest a tan or beige. The rooms seems a little small and dark as well so you probably don't want your furniture to be too dark either. A couch with a few end tables would look very nice in that space. Maybe you can add some pops of color, maybe a yellow, with pillows.
  • I would paint the walls a pale beige and then buy a color in olive green and go with this palette

Blue is very neutral, so I would pick a complimentary neutral for the wall and go with a color you love for the sofa

  • Is getting a sofa in a color you like with a well-fitting slipcover that goes with the carpet an option? That way if you change the floors in the future you're not stuck with a sofa meant for blue carpet, kwim? Or what about a dove gray?

  • I'd keep your sofa and other seating furniture in a neutral scheme so when you change the carpet or if you move, you haven't blocked yourself into a decor style with non-neutral seating.

DH and I have a light tan microsuede sofa with a very light herringbone pattern in brown in it. It has endured baby spit-up, dog drool, beverage spills, etc. and clean up is so easy. I love microsuede for a family room!
