guys, is this bad?

my mouth tastes all weird and i have these sort of nerve twinges and my ear hurts.  all of these are things that the internet tells me are symptoms of dry socket!!!!!  however, my ear often hurts because i grind my teeth in my sleep, i'm on an antibiotic which can cause weird taste as a side effect, and i had 4 wisdom teeth yanked so nerve twinges doesn't seem out of the realm of normal.

also, i'm in a lot of pain.  it's not getting any better as the days progress.  it only gets better with drugs.

i had my husband look into my mouth with a flashlight and he didn't see any bone/weird discoloration/etc.  but he's a lawyer, not a dentist.

if i call the oral surgeon's office tomorrow and tell them that really i just want some more drugs or something so i can function, are they going to laugh at me and send me a brochure for hazelton?

kiss it, nest.

Re: guys, is this bad?

  • I can only answer the ear part: and ears often hurt when there is jaw pain. So I diagnose this as normal. (trust me, I'm a doctor lol)

    Id probably call anyway though.

  • I would call and just tell them you thought the pain should be easing up by now. Sorry you're still not feeling great. :(
  • i would call and explain that you still have pain - and ask for more drugs.  some people just take longer to heal.  i don't think it's abnormal, but i do think you should let them know.

  • Didn't you have them out last Thursday or Friday?

Your pain should be easing up by now. I would call the doctor and let them know it's not getting any better. If they feel like it's within the realm of normal, they'll give you more drugs. If not, they'll have you come back in.

I'm sorry, oral surgery really sucks. Sad

  • I had dry socket, and even percocet wouldn't help with the pain. The pain with dry socket is probably the most severe pain I've ever felt (fFWIW, I haven't had kids, lol). That said, if you're still unsure, it can't hurt to give the doc a call.

I have nothing to add here, just wanted to give you a head pat and tell you I wish you were feeling better already.

I hated getting my wisdom teeth out.  My first memory when I woke up was of the nurses frantically trying to get me to calm down (apparently I was screaming in pain) because I was scaring the other patients.  LOL

  • The taste is a combo of not being able to eat right and the antibiotics. The ear is because of the jaw being all surgeried and stuff. My bill is in the mail. Im not even a phd though!

  • Tooth stuff freaks me out like nobody's business so I'd be calling.

I'm sure all your "this is the logical explanation" reasoning is sound, but just in case....I'd call.

  • i had them out last friday.

i'm not normally a wimp about pain.  but the pills are once every 4 hours, and at 3 hours, i start to get distracted from the pain.  not like writhing on the floor or anything, but there were a lot of Xs on my timesheet today.

    kiss it, nest.
  • You are several days out; it should be hurting less or not at all. Call in the am, don't hesitate.

I'm sorry you are in misery.

SO SINGS MY SOUL *WHAM!* MY SAVIOR GOD TO THEE *WHAM!* HOW GREAT THOU ART *WHAM!* HOW GREAT THOU ART *WHAM!*
  • Call.  I'm pretty sure your pain should be easing up by now.

I remember my jaw (like, the joint) being sore for a while, but not distractingly painful, and definitely not needing pain meds every 4 hours.

I hope you feel better soon.

  • I had a dry socket and it felt like someone was driving a nail through my face. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I remember mine feeling progressively better.  I'd call.  I've read that they can plug the dry socket up with some nerve numbing stuff, etc. if it's that.

    Feel better soon, sista.

  • It's been 5 days? Dry socket is a possibility but pain is still to be expected. If the pain is/gets noticeably worse, I would be concerned, but if you are anything like I was, you are going to be sore for a couple of weeks. I was taking 1000mg of acetaminophen every four hours for at least a week and a half afterward. Your jaw is going to be sore because they propped it open, and now it's healing from being cut into.

How often and how painful (scale of 1-10) are the "nerve twinges"? Are you sleeping through the night? What kind of pain med are you taking (if you don't mind me asking)? Any aching in any of the extraction sites? Can you pinpoint one area (upper, lower, left, right) that hurts more than others, or are all areas pretty equal? I ask because I am a dental assistant, so I see a lot of dry socket.

the pain is worst in my lower right jaw and right ear, sort of inside.

the nerve twinges are about a 5 or 6, happen a couple times an hour.

all 4 extraction sites ache; salt water rinses seem to help that a bit.

    i'm taking hydrocodone.

and moe, i'm with you on the drug front.

    kiss it, nest.
  • I think you should call.  I don't think you should be in so much pain at this point.
  • I got an infection after getting my wisdom teeth pulled. I'd call ASAP tomorrow and tell them about the pain. I don't think it should be that bad at this point.

I was still really swollen and it just wasn't getting better, so I let the doc know. The pain meds were making me loopy, too, and that didn't help. I don't remember what they gave me to get the healing back on track, but it helped a lot.

Being in that much pain isn't helping your body do what it needs to heal -- call!

I would definitely give them a call in the morning.

If it isn't dry socket, they can ease your worry and give you more/different meds to help you out. A dull ache all over is normal after only five days, it's the deep, pulsing ache from a specific area that keeps you awake at night that would not be normal at all. If it does turn out to be dry socket, the earlier they can catch and treat it, the less pain you have to deal with, because dry socket sucks

Warm salt water rinses are awesome. They can actually make a huge difference in healing time and comfort. Just be sure that you aren't swishing too vigorously.

Are you alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen? I can't remember if that was suggested in one of your past threads, but that can help with the pain, also.

  • okay, i am calling tomorrow morning for sure.

  • Oh man, that sucks. I'm sorry.

True story - I was SO terrified of getting dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth out. Prior to having them removed, I developed a really bad infection in one side where they were impacted, and had to be on antibiotics for a few days before they would remove them. Of course they didn't give me any painkillers with the antibiotics. :/

So by the time I had them out, I hadn't slept in a week and I was like a desperate crazy person. I was like "What if I get dry socket? What if I get it? Oh God, OH GOD I CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE OF THIS SH*T"

Anyways... *shoulder pat* I hope you get some good drugs and feel better soon.

I was the exact same way when I got mine out in December. Seeing patients in pain so often made me completely out of control with freaking out about it. I drove my H crazy. I was convinced that every single thing I did or didn't do was going to turn me into that small percentage of situations where the clot dissolves for no reason.

It was well past a full week before I was willing to swish, spit, or use a straw. I also made my H check my extraction sites for the clots multiple times a day. I'm kind of a total weirdo.

  • My husband had his wisdom teeth out last year and he was out of work for two weeks. It took 6 months for him to stop feeling pain. His dental surgeon had to really go deep to take out two teeth, with the distinct possibility he might lose the ability to taste. I'm trying to say that everyone is different and depending on how old you are and how deep your teeth went into your jaw your pain may be normal. Definitely call in the morning and see what your dentist thinks though :) good luck! I hope you start feeling better soon!

I labored hard for 17 hours, pushing for 3 w/my kid and I would do that again any day of the week and twice on Sunday before I dealt with the pain of dry sockets again. It's relentless and ruthless. So, cville, if you're up right now b/c you can't sleep, if you have a 15 on a scale of 10, call the oral surgeon. I seriously remember sitting in my living room at 2am thinking I should slam my head into the wall b/c at least I'd have a different kind of pain to focus on. I was on hydrocodone, too. I hope it's not dry sockets and you turn the corner and the pain goes away!

YES. A day or two after, I absentmindedly spit after brushing my teeth, immediately screeched in horror, and ran into the living room to my husband all "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD I SPIT! I SPIT!!!!! LOOK!! WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, HEELPP MEEEE!!!!!!"

Thank God I ended up having a relatively easy recovery.

  • I had two dry sockets. The pain was so bad I couldn't focus on anything else.

If it's not getting any better, you should call. I sat around with the dry socket because I didn't know any better. Once they covered the exposed nerve, I felt a million times better.

  • I'm glad you are calling today and hopefully you get some relief!  If it's possible, I had immediate dry socket in one spot when I had my wisdom teeth removed.  They told me to call if the pain got worse - and it didn't, it stayed the same, but it was bad. Bad bad bad.  When I went in for my follow up a week later they said they were surprised I'd lasted that long and I was like, well, I thought it was normal!  The pain hadn't gotten worse, it was always painful!  I wish I had just called sooner.

  • so, i don't have dry socket.  apparently when they removed my bottom right wisdom tooth it revealed some serious gum issues below that no one could see before, which is why i'm having pretty severe pain on that side.  and apparently why they sent me home with an antibiotic.  allegedly my husband was informed of this, but all he remembers is them telling him i might hurt more on the right.  and 3-4 days after surgery often patients will have a pain spike that should eventually die down.

i'm now armed with a prescription for badass ibuprofen so i can function at my job (hydrocodone was making me loopy).  but pretty much i just have to deal and keep up with the salt water rinses.

  • Well, that sucks. As painful as the dry sockets were - the relief was immediate once they inserted the special gel covering.

I was hoping that would do it for you!
