I was subbing in the same class as I did last week, so I've gotten to know some of these kids and I really like the school.
So the first thing, is that there is a kid in the class who's name is Juan Valdez. As in...the coffee dude. Not terribly exciting, just kind of funny.
The other thing was crappy. A 10th grade girl broke down in class and when I asked her what was wrong, she said that her boyfriend had choked her. We immediately went to a private part of the room and she spilled her story- and holy hell, the poor thing. This was not the first violent incident. I told her that I did have to tell the school counselor and that all the adults would help her stay safe (her boyfriend was older and didnt go to school).
Within an hour of talking to the school counselor, the girl's mom was with her, and the police arrived to take a statement and take pictures of her injuries. She came back to my class later to tell me that she is pressing formal charges and then thanked me. OMG. I felt so sick over the whole thing. She is only 14. I hope she really gets out of it.
Re: Two things to share from teaching this week:
You quite possibly saved that girl's life.
You are so seriously my hero right now.
omg. You are that girl's hero.
FOURTEEN? That reminds me of that Lifetime movie with Candace Cameron and something Savage. Fred maybe?
Yes, that's one of the charges. As well as several others.
