allergic reaction?

For about three days now my face has been itchy, tight, and red- mostly in the cheek bone area/lower half of my face. I'm thinking it's an allergic reaction but have no clue what it could be a reaction to. The only thing I've noticeably changed recently is my conditioner- I bought the biodegradable version of the garnier fructis instead of the regular. Could the formula be that different that it's possible I'm allergic to it?!

Re: allergic reaction?

  • Stop using the new stuff and if it doesn't subside, go to the doctor.

In the mean time you can take an allergy pill and use some cortisone cream on your face to see if that helps.

You should go to the doctor.

really? I was just hoping someone would be able to relate and tell me how to fix it- beyond the obvious "stop using the conditioner."

  • Have you tried lotion or moisturizer? Has the weather changed recently? I get really red, itchy dry spots sometimes when the weather changes, especially if it's been raining a lot and suddenly dries up.

  • are you allergic to anything else?

Not really. The generic dust and pollen but even then it's nothing like this- just the occasional sneezing fit.

I put cortizone cream on my face and that's helped with the itch so far but I just want it to go away : (

  • Is your hair long enough that it would touch that portion of your face? Do you get conditioner on that part of your face? Does your scalp, neck, back have any of the same itching/redness?

I'm a book of different allergies both dermatological and anaphylactic, it sucks. In general your body changes every 7 years, so something that you weren't allergic to before, you can now suddenly be allergic to, same with the opposite.

There are different fruit oils that are used in the biodegradable conditioner that aren't used in the normal conditioner, but I really think if it was that you would also have irritation on your neck, scalp, back, etc. as those are all places that would come into contact with the conditioner at some point as your washing.

Could be that you touched or picked up something with your hands that you didn't realize (a pet maybe) and touched your face? If you have a cat or dog that goes outside something like poison ivy/poison oak would be possible and since you can't smell it or see it you wouldn't know to wash your hands.

Pick up some Zanfel (http://www.zanfel.com/help/) if it hasn't gone away and I agree see your doctor if this doesn't help.

Wow thank you so much. Those are lots of things I didn't think of- I think you might be right It may not be the shampoo since It's only my face that is reacting. I do have a dog so it's possible i got something from him; although he hasn't been acting strange. Thanks again!

  • go easy with the cortisone cream on the face.  I usually tell people not to use it on your face at all, especially if you have a darker skin tone.  It can leave light patches.

*sigh* I can't seem to win with this one! haha. I have an olive skin tone and have already used it twice pretty much all over my face except for the forehead... apparently I will be stopping that now. Thanks for the info!

  • Not sure if anyone really cares but I know sometimes people want followups to posts so here it is: The itching has subsided a lot (no idea why) but the redness has remained. Since it hasn't spread to any other places I'm not going to worry about it so long as it keeps up this course. Thanks so much for everyone's help and ideas- they were great (especially the cortizone comments- i do not need splotches all over my face)! Wish I knew what caused this!
