Starting to brainstorm a bit

As most know we just moved.  We didn't quite hit a window for an open house, but DH and I have a few friends in our new city that we'd like to get together and have a cook out.  Between us there will be 10 adults and 9 kids.  Woah, that was the first time I counted it up.

This is going to be kind of a random group of people.  Two of the guys and one girl went to hs together.  One of the girls went to hs with me.  One of the guys is from my hometown and knows my friend.  One woman has been around long enough to know everybody.  One guy has met me twice and dh once.  So, I may need to play more chatty hostess than normal.  Putting my quiet DH on the grill seems like a good option.

I was thinking for food

I don't know what to start with

Main- shrimp kabobs, beef kabobs, and hot dogs.

Sides- I thought about some grilled veggies, pasta salad, fruit of some sort.  I also do a baked white bean and fennel dish that might be nice, but I don't know.

Dessert- lemonade cake and brownies?

Drinks- beer, wine, soft drinks, juice boxes, and we have a full bar.

Re: Starting to brainstorm a bit

  • Random groups can be really fun because the people have to talk to someone other than their spouse!

I think things sound pretty good.  I have recipes for grilled veggies and pasta salad if you want them.

I'm afraid I don't know exactly what white beans and fennel are.  I had to google it and it's not what I was expecting, so if you say it's a crowd pleaser, I think a warm side would be a good addition.

I think the 2 simple desserts sound good.

  • I'm good on the veggies and pasta salad, but thank you.  The beans are an Ina Garten recipe- cannelini beans, fennel, carrots, sage, rosemary, and romano in chicken stock.  I'm not sure if the one spouse is a vegetarian, but I can make it with veg stock and he'd be able to do the grilled veggies and the beans which should be enough right?

What about apps?  Any thoughts beyond a cheese tray?  I was thinking something with crackers and chips for kids.

  • Hi!  That looks awesome so far...

For the kids: cute paper bags of popcorn?  old fashioned soft pretzels with mustard?

For the apps: Hummus, or Cucumber Type Dip (I have recipes if you like), with Pita Chips might work well with your menu.  I'll try to think of something else for you.

BTW - am making your Cucumber Salsa next Friday for DH's B-Day and planning our own mini - "Fiesta".  I'll let you guys know if I come up with any other good new recipes.

    :)

  • I would say to also have out board games or fun activities. That might help to get the conversation rolling and you can really get to know ppl by playing games. You could also have a few items in mind to bring up to get conversations going - maybe hot new movies that are out, bestseller books they may have read, a sports team that you all follow, stuff like that. Have fun!
