This is WHY I need the filing cabinets

Feel free to tell me you're done hearing about my stupid issues with the filing cabinet. I wanted to show you guys why I needed them because maybe you have some better ideas than I do about another concept I can try.

Here is a pic of the wall I am referring to. Sorry its dark and messy. I took the pic early this morning:

 

Ok. And here is a sketch over the pic of what I am trying to accomplish. Because of the size of the sofa, I only have about 19" on either side of the sofa. So I wanted to do a filing cabinet on either side of the sofa (for storage of files), and then I was going to build a bookcase on top which would wrap around the wall. I want to do a roman shade in the window and two wall sconces on the space between the window and where the bookshelf would begin. Any other thoughts or ideas you have would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Why don't you just start the bookcase where the file cabinets would be? That way you can control the size and how it looks.

Ditto the pp. Just start the bookcase on the floor then march thee to Target for some fun file boxes.

You know, Im actually not opposed to the idea. I was hoping to have some "closed" storage, so everything wouldnt be so exposed, but if push came to shove, I guess I could go that route.

*kicks dirt and pouting* I just want want I want and I dont wanna settle. Aw man.

Could you do a couple drawers instead of just a shelf? That might require a bit of hardware, but I'm sure it's doable.

Its possible. I am not suuuper handy (and dont have all the necessary tools) to pull something off like drawers with casters and such. But my dad is pretty handy and will be visiting me soon. I might be able to assign him this task.

I like the idea of drawers. I'm sure you could add filing cabinet type hardware to the inside and make it work.

Ikea has drawers that fit on their bookcases. Even if you DIY the rest, you could get the bottom shelves with drawers from Ikea, right? Billy and Expedit both have drawers or ways to enclose the shelves.

and Expedit Drawer (will this fit?) or use baskets or Kassett storage boxes instead?

If you want "end table space" built in I bet it wouldn't be difficult to build a ledge out of one of the shelves.

I really like your idea, and can see why you want the file cabinets as the base.

You can get the inserts, etc. to make a nice file drawer at a place like rockler.com.

What a great link! Thanks for sharing! I could totally make a square shelf base with door on the front and inside do these!

I was going to suggest a barrister's style bookcase the other day when I saw the title of your post but I was too lazy.  So you should do that.
