This is fine, right? Daycare just called - injury.

Apparently L tripped and hit her mouth. She's got a fat lip.

Her tooth is loose, but she's been saying it was loose for a couple of weeks, and she's already lost two teeth.

So this is fine, right? I don't think we need to take her into the dentist unless it's discolored or something, indicating it's broken, right?

  • Probably just fine. I'd only take her if she is still complaining in a few days or there is otherwise obvious injury.

  • TOTALLY fine.  KHC did this when he was like a year old, to one of his bottom teeth.  It was loose for like three years before it finally fell out.

The dentist said it was no big deal.  Even if the tooth discolors, it doesn't necessitate extraction unless it's super noticeable.

  • Awesome. Thank you both. My gut was that it's not a big deal, but I didn't want to ignore something important!

  • It should be fine, but also watch her gums. Sometimes there's an abscess there that will require a root canal or other work.

  • What tooth is it? Upper, lower, front, back, left, right? Have you seen yourself that it was loose before, or has she just told you it was?

It may be a little sore for a couple of days, but as long as there is no severe swelling, pain, or drainage I would just allow it to come out on its own. If it were an adult tooth, I would say you should get it checked out, but we see a lot of little kids who have bumped teeth. 99% of the time, it's no big deal, and this sounds like one of those no big deal times. Even discoloration can be completely normal. Primary teeth can actually bruise. Again, as long as there's no severe swelling, pain, or drainage, bruising/discoloration after a bump is completely normal.

Thank you. It looks okay - she said it's a little sore, but eating fine and slept fine and all that jazz. We were at the dentist last month and they pointed out that it was loose - so I knew it was. It's one of the front teeth in the middle.

Tell her to wiggle that sucker out while it's extra loose. ;]
