I think I asked on here before, but I'm asking again. My mini dotty Dex hates his collar and I don't know what to do about it. He cries every time we put it on and it's fitted to the right size. Any rec's?
Re: Collar issues
My grandmother's dog won't wear a collar. He's chipped, has a fenced yard and she uses a harness to walk him (large lhasa apso). If your dog is small, this might work for him.
We have a mixed hound, and I couldn't use a harness with him (even with gentle leader that guy can pull me kicking and screaming down the road on my back - but its getting better).
Not a big fan of choke collars. They can injure the dog when used improperly, and, besides, because they are so loose the dog can get out of them very easily or get hung on something when not leashed.
ETA: OP, I'd try a harness. They make all different kinds, so hopefully you can find one that works for him.
A harness would definitely be worth a try, then maybe the collar can be not a tight, and just for the tags for ID.
This is what we do for our doxies. But even if he won't tolerate the collar if it's loose, then just put his tags on the harness. I never clip their leashes to their collar. Their necks are too fragile
Our Chessie is a small breed dog (Chihuahua mix) and she has really sensitive skin. No matter what brand/material of collar we try and no matter how loose we make it the collar irritates her skin and makes the fur fall out. We've always walked her on a harness so we just lost the collar completely and clipped her tags to the harness. She goes collar-less in the house and wears the harness when we go out.
It might not be ideal if your dog is a door-bolter and you think he'd escape without tags, but our dog is microchipped and not a runner so it works for us.
