Found a 12ft sink hole in my backyard!

I'm kinda freaked out. A dump truck tried to back onto the grass in our back yard and started sinking. It was quite alarming and the driver was clearly rattled. He had to dump the loam where he was and lighten up fast - he was able to get out. But that area he sunk in has just been giving way more and more since he left a week ago. We also got heavy rain last weekend. Today my foot started going through the ground. I moved the grass/sod away (very easily) and uncovered a massive hole. I stuck my shovel down it and it went all the way down without touching anything. DH is acting like it's not big deal, says we've filled holes in the yard before but nothing like this!! I have it blocked off right now but with young kids this is quite unneverving. We are going to fill it with the loam we just had delivered, I hope this is all it needs. Has anyone dealt with a sink hole before?

  • I haven't, but just filling it in is not going to be enough to resolve this.  You are going to want to contact your insurance company, a geological engineer, etc.

I just googled, and got some info on this website: http://www.sinkhole.org/WhatToDo.php

I totally agree. 'just filling it' is definitely NOT the right course of action.

  • Depending on where you live, you might want to call the County too.  Please be very careful walking around, esp if you have noticed several.

  • Do you have water mains in the nearby vicinity?  A 12 foot deep hole should definitely be investigated. Maybe there is an underground cistern or septic tank the gave way.
