New tile and grout down - white haze on grout?!?

We just put new floor tile in our kitchen and dining room. The grout is supposed to be a light grayish color, but it is a chalky white. I have read a lot about this, but I knew the best place to come was to TN! Have any of you ladies run into this after tiling? What is the best way to get the white haze off the grout (not tile) before sealing it? I think I am going to try the vinegar mixture this morning, does anybody know if that will work?

Thanks:)

Re: New tile and grout down - white haze on grout?!?

  • It sounds like efflorescence.  I believe you would want to acid wash it, but I am not sure the name or brand of the product you would need.
  • We've always used a vinegar wash to remove haze. Cheesecloth  works very well as a buffing cloth to help get the last bits of haze. They do sell a haze remover from home depot/ lowes, but I've never tried it.
  • We used vinegar with a soft cloth and wiped over the tile it took it right off

  • I am no help. But I am sadly disappointed to see no pics of the floor in the blog. :(
