How to even begin painting shellacked cabinets?
My house was built in the 1930's and still has the original cabinets. I actually like them and don't plan on replacing them but they are a mess. I think the wood was shellacked and at the edge of the cabinets there is built up grime. I think painting them and putting new hardware would be easier then trying to stain them.
Has anyone here done this sort of thing and had it turn out well?! The only picture I can find is of the island DH was putting in with the cabinets in the background.

Re: How to even begin painting shellacked cabinets?
Shellac should pretty easy to get off. It's put on in a solution of alcohol and water damages the finish. One of those and some elbow grease should do the job.
Here: http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/home/how-to-strip-wooden-furniture.htm looks like you test with denatured alcohol, then lacquer remover.
Thanks! I book marked the page. This project is almost overwhelming but I think it would totally change the look of the kitchen.
