are there bad risks in taking obscene amounts of ibuprofen?

to combat pain while also functioning at work, i have to take like 3 or 4 pills, 200mg each, about once every 4 hours.  the bottle says no more than 6 pills in 24 hours.  to which i say nanny nanny boo boo.

anyway, is this going to kill me or something?  i'm not drinking right now so as to preserve my liver.  and i see stomach issues as a possible side effect, but i've been queasy since last week so that's no biggie.

kiss it, nest.

I think just the ulcer problem if it's a long term thing?  I hope you feel better soon.

  • I take 800mgs a several times a day to combat horrendous cramps.  I haven't died yet.

ETA: I wouldn't do this for an extended period of time.

  • I'm pretty sure that as long as it isn't a long-term thing, you are golden.

  • It can lead to kidney failure.

  • The guidelines are conservative and the risk is liver damage. So, as long as you don't make this routine you should be ok. Can you try taking Tylenol in between?

  • It really is hard on your stomach lining.  NSAIDS can be an assshole that way.  It's not going to kill you.
  • it's hard on your liver, but I don't know how long you can safely take that much.  the amount your taking is basically the prescription amount (so it's not crazy), have you talked to a dr?
  • The first day of my period I probably take almost 2,000 mg of ibuprofen. I have horrible cramps.

I don't think ibuprofen is too bad for your liver, but it can irritate your stomach.

    You shall survive!

  • When I was in Spain and threw my back out, they were having me take 1600 mg. every 8 hours.  I didn't end up taking that much, but if they can do it in europe, I think you can do it here ;-)

yes, the oral surgeon told me to do this.  i'm going to wean over the weekend, but i can't be super distracted or nap right now, so suppressing the pain is more important.

and i'm loling at "it can cause kidney failure."  thanks bluebook!  i hope i don't die!

  • It may kill your stomach, but no it isn't going to kill you.

I would see if you can alternate it though with Tylenol 3 if they will give it to you.

  • A normal dose on rx ibuprofen is 800mg 3 times a day. you should be fine, but try to eat  something if you can.

  • The prescription dose is 800 mg every four to six hours, so I don't think you're going to die. Long term use is associated with ulcers. I second adding in the Tylenol.

  • My gyno said those are "normal people" recommendations, that if they haven't been to a doctor and they need more then that they need to be checked out because something is wrong.  In my case (and you mentioned surgeon so I'm going to assume yours too) we know why I have pain and it's fine because it's not going to be forever and I actually need it.

I was told you can take it with gravol if that helps you feel less queasy.

  • tylenol.  you all are funny.

tylenol is about as effective on pain for me as would be a slap on the ass.

i'll just try to cut down starting tomorrow.  i'm doing a bit better.

    kiss it, nest.
  • My NP tells me to that that much when my herniated discs flare up, and my oral surgeon told me to take that much when I had my wisdom teeth out.

    I think you're fine.

i know.  i felt so guilty giving it to L when she was little for fevers and stuff.  like "sorry kid, i'm pretty sure this is useless, but it's all we've got."

  • Ibuprofen can affect your kidneys

     Tylenol can acffect your liver

all pain meds when taken at high doses for extended periods of time can affect your organs.

If you are taking a high dose for a limited amount of time, you will probably be fine.

Maybe look into Aleve as an alternative.

thats all evan can ever take (well, with very few exceptions. he got motrin once in the hospital when his fever was 105 and wouldnt come down with tylenol). effing sucks for him.

Yeah, I have to stay away from ibuprofen because of my kidney issues.

  • Here's my rule:

400 mg: you can take every 4 hours

600 mg: you can take every 6 hours

800 mg: you can take every 8 hours

Yes, it can upset your stomach and cause ulcers if you over use it. It can cause kidney damage with over use. You're probably fine to take 800 mg every 8 hours for a few days. Ibuprofen is not cleared by the liver - it is cleared by the kidneys, so it won't damage your liver.

Tylenol is cleared through the liver.

  • I have to take a high dose and DD is on aleve consistently for the past 1 1/2 years because of her knee.

Thank you! When FI gets a headache, he takes ONE Tylenol. He'd be better off taking a damn M&M. I pop 3 Advil every four hours for cramps. It sometimes causes a rebound headache the next day but it's better then the cramps.

ah ok.  oral surgery sucks.  how come they didn't give you the good stuff?!  I remember almost enjoying those days post surgery ;)

hmm... it shouldn't.  It's not even excreted through the GI tract.

I have never heard anyone say this before.

And the liver information is wrong too.

Kidney failure IS a risk, but as long as you're not doing it for more than a few days in a row (or have an underlying predisposition towards kidney issues) you should be okay.

Make sure to take it with food, or it will tear up your stomach.

  • I used to take approx 600mg of Ibuprofen a day for my back and hips, and to help me sleep. Then I got diagnosed with my liver problems and they said no more Ibuprofen. Even though in large quantities Tylenol is worse on the liver, it's the better option in small doses. So, I can take 1 500mg Tylenol when I get a headache or pain, but it had better be pretty bad. Otherwise my doctor told me to take an FMLA day and lay in bed. Gee, thanks.

I was surprised it actually did anything-I guess when you have nothing else it will help.
