Love this media cabinet, but...

I was wondering if the quality is good for the price, though I would not get it without a sale and a % off if possible.  Here is the piece I am referring to.  We are running out of room with out current TV stand that we bought a few years ago from Home Decorators (it was relatively inexpensive and it is looking like it now).  Plus, it got pretty beat up when we moved and it isn't working for our needs anymore.  I like having storage in the doors, too, which I have not seen a lot.  Is PB furniture quality very good?  We would not have any plans to replace it in the near future, so we don't want to spend a lot if it is something that is not well made.  Do you know of anywhere else (online) that I could find something similar?

Re: Love this media cabinet, but...

  • Surprise $1200?  Um, even if the quality is awesome, there is NO way I'd pay $1200 for a tv stand.  Our 47" flat panel didn't even cost that much.  What are you running out of room with?  DVD/Game storage?

  • I agree, it is steep, which is why I am either wanting to find something similar or I would want to wait it out until I could get a deal (sale and % off, which I changed to make mention of in my OP). It is the only cabinet I have found that has the extra storage in the doors, which is very helpful and something that is pretty close to a must have in my book.  We are running out of room for both DVD and game storage.
  • Have you considered something like this for dvd storage? We have one and it's awesome.  No dvd or game cases, and there is a pop out list, so as long as you put the right dvd in the right spot, it's super easy to find.  You could do a few of these, and get a smaller media cabinet.

  • I have seen those before.  I like having the cases, which I know takes up more space, but I have a number of boxed set/commemorative DVDs/Blu Rays that have extra stuff with them (booklets, etc.) that I like to keep together.  Plus, I think for us, it would be easier to not put them away and lose them or scratch them if we didn't have the cases.  We also have a storage cabinet like this (I didn't mine from Plow and Hearth and I didn't spend that much either), but it is completely full.
  • I wouldn't spend $1200 on PB.  If I was going to spend a chunk of change like that, it better be fine furniture.
  • I don't intend on spending $1200 for it.  I am wondering how their quality is, though, if I could get it on sale or find something similar elsewhere.
  • We got some thing very similar at Ashley Furniture for less than $400. Good quality and we love it.

Did it have the shelves in the drawers?  Thanks for the tip.  I will check them out.

Sure did. It's perfect for DVD's and such. I checked their website but was unable to find it. I know they still have it though because we were in the store less than a two weeks ago and they had the exact same one there. It came in 3 different size to accommodate tv size. We got the medium sized one and its perfect for our 46 inch.

  • I have the Rhys Media stand, we got it 2 years ago. I absolutely love it! Its a solid piece of furniture. I wanted something solid and not something we would have to put together (ikea quality) It looks awesome and make the entire great room look better. I've been very happy with it.  A quality TV stand does make the appearance of the room look better IMO.

This. We have started going to independent stores for furniture. While it's more expensive, it's not as expensive as PB and is better quality. Our TV stand is similar in shape/size but has a ton of drawers instead of shelving space, and was $800 after tax.

Sorry, I meant did it have selves in the doors like this one.  I am guessing you knew what I meant.  Do you know what the name of the style is?

  • Why not get a nice dresser off CL?  We got this one for $25 at a mini-storage clearance sale advertised on CL.  (That's DH's work apartment that had to be done on a budget.)

For DVD storage, get rid of the cases and store the DVD in CD cases.   DH had over 400 DVDs and we donated all the cases to the public library and now all the notebooks fit in a couple drawers.

  • I'm a PB fan and I like the quality. H and I are probably going to go with this one.

If you do a change of address, they'll send you a 10% off coupon.

Our local CL doesn't have anything that is my style or worth buying on it.  I did check there, though.  I looked in areas where we go to visit and will keep checking there if I don't find something else that will work.  I do like the look of the PB one I posted and think that would be perfect for our needs, but would like a lower price before I consider actually buying it.

Sorry. I know this is going to piss you off, but I'm confused as to why you continue to come here and ask advice when pretty much every time you either  blow off people's suggestions or offer a litany of excuses as to why those suggestions won't work for you. It makes it hard to help you out. You can't demand top-quality furniture for rock-bottom prices, and if that's what you want, you'll need to find a way to make CL, flea markets or garage sales work for you.

  • I dont know. We have a pb crib in a dark finish and it's gotten so beat up so easily. It seems like it doesn't take much to put a pretty good scratch in it, and the dark finish has gotten scratched off fairly easily. I probably wouldn't buy any pb wood furniture again.

  • We have (I think) this TV stand from Best Buy/Magnolia Audio. I don't remember it being THIS expensive, though!

Top drawer (shown open) is our BluRay/games storage drawer. It hold a lot!

This.  CL isn't a literal suggestion.  It's a garage sales / flea markets / junktique / anywhere you can get items second hand suggestion.  We've all told you repeatedly that when you're tight on funds, you have to hit the pavement and search for deals.  You'll notice I said we actually got the dresser at a mini-storage sell-off - that's a great place to find furniture at a discount.  Go see what you can find in thrift stores etc.  If you can't find anything in your area, go to the second hand stores in nearby swanky zip codes.

Oh, sorry. No, it does not have shelves on the doors. I can check to see if I can find a module number or name when I get home tonight.

I don't blow off suggestions or "offer a litany of excuses."  I have looked at the various suggestions that were given on this post today (and have done that with others too), but if it's not what I am looking for, then I will keep looking.  If a suggestion is not a possibility for me (ex: go to a swanky zip code nearby.  I don't live near any, I am in the middle of nowhere), it's not an excuse, just the truth.  I am not looking for rock bottom prices, but I do like a deal.  I don't want to pay more than I have to and perhaps you feel the same way when you buy something that is more costly or that you will have for a while.  Anything second hand in my area is usually junk, 99.9% of the time.  I was pretty much just wanting to know if PB furniture was good quality or if the price was inflated for what you get and if anyone knew where I could find a similar product with the same features for less since it is hard to find (at least for me) a media cabinet/TV stand with the shelves in the doors.  I really do appreciate the responses that I receive that are constructive, but if a suggestion doesn't work for me I can't help that.  I am sure I have suggested things to others that didn't work for them.  I guess I will just keep that to myself next time.  I guess I figured that if I mentioned something didn't work or wasn't what I was looking for, others might suggest something different.

Wow!  I am surprised that you found one with the shelves in the doors.  I have a heck of a time doing that when I look.  It is quite a bit less expensive than the PB one.  It's hard to tell what the front looks like in the picture, so I am not sure if it is the look style wise I was looking for and I am not sure of the quality, but it does have a lot of space and would be better than what we have.  I will bookmark it.  Maybe it would be a good option for us until we could afford something that better quality.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Great! Thanks so much.  I will google that too and see what I find.  The one from sears is more along the lines of what I was looking for.  Thanks again!

  • My sis just got a similar pottery barn one.  I gave her my 10% off movers coupon plus it was on sale.  The quality seems fantastic and I would assume it would last a lifetime.  I read once that moving furniture really lessens the life.  If you plan on not moving it often, and don't think you'll outgrow the style, I think the money is good for the value.

Thank you very much for your post!  Just what I needed to know.  It is still more than I would like to spend right now, but maybe if I can get a good discount on top of a sale like your sister did it will be a good option.  Otherwise, there were a few less expensive options posted that I can consider too.  Thanks again!  I really appreciate the input!
