Bringing out natural wave-avoiding frizz

My hair has some natural wave & curl to it.  I always just straighten my hair though because it's easier than trying to fight my frizziness when I let my hair air dry.

I've used oils, gels, wave spray etc which do ok to bring out my waves/curls, but then the top of my head still gets so frizzy.  And I definitely don't want crunchy hair from using too much product.

Can anyone give me some tips on products and on styling that may help?  I think the problem is more my technique rather than products.  Thanks!

And to add, my hair is past my shoulders & fine.

Re: Bringing out natural wave-avoiding frizz

  • I asked about products a few weeks ago and got a lot of good recommendations:

Technique-wise, I find it does help to use a diffuser and to not touch my hair much while it's drying. (Comb it out when it's still pretty wet and don't towel dry it for too long, scrunch it with your hands too much, etc.)

  • I've definitely tried the diffuser before but find that it still makes the frizz worse than air drying.

  • And thanks for the link, I'll check that out!

  • Are you blowdrying it? Blowdrying my hair wrecks it (with frizziness). I've found a lot of success with Frizz Ease Dream Curl spray and Herbal Essence Spray Gel. I don't spray enough of the gel to make it crunchy. Before I figured out how much to use, if I had some crunch, I'd just scrunch my hair to get rid of it.

Also, do you know that there is gel out there specifically for the "wet" look? I lol'd when I saw it, because, really, people want crunchy hair? D:

  • I do blowdry everyother day since I always wear it straight.  So yeah it definitely has heat damage from that & my flat iron.  I also curl it on occasion since I like the look of waves in my hair-just wish I could get my natural ones to look that nice!

  • When I want to release my naturally wavy mane, I comb it while it's still significantly wet with a wide tooth comb, then put in whatever product I'm using and just let it dry naturally. This morning, it was 90% of the way dry by the time I got to work. No scrunching or blow drying.

I used a sample of this stuff from Living Proof today, but I don't have a specific product that I'm loyal to. http://rstyle.me/e4ffkucnse

Of course everyone's hair is different, but this is what I ended up with (sorry for huge pic):

  • I like the diffuser for body and wave definition, but I agree, it doesn't help with frizz. I think more than anything, you have to find the right hair product for your hair type and location. I have 2b/2c hair according to this chart: http://www.naturallycurly.com/hair-types

When I finish my shower I put in my hair product while my hair is sopping, comb it out with a wide tooth comb while bent over, scrunch it using a microfiber towel and then plop it in the towel. I don't touch my hair with my hands after I've put in product, and I never rub my scalp with the towel.

In Texas, I use Aveda Phomollient for hold and Jessicurl's Gelebration Spray for curl. Once my hair has towel dried a bit, I diffuse for a few minutes to give the roots some lift and for a little wave definition (I diffuse bent over so that my top layers get some breeze protection), and then I let my hair air dry the rest of the way. No matter what, I will need something for frizz once my hair completely dries. I love Aveda's Be Curly Curl Control, but it's been discontinued. It's a sticky cream/pomade . I've tried Ouidad Climate Control (it did nothing), and Jessicurl's Awe Inspiring Spray (okay curl boost, no frizz control), a new Aveda product, and something else, but I haven't been happy with any of them.

When I'm in Ohio for the summer, my waves are super easy to control. Some Aveda Phomollient and a dab of Aveda Be Curly Curl Enhancer, and that it's. I don't need to diffuse or to put on any product once my hair is dry.

  •  the B & B surf spray! although, not every day...I think the salt makes it a little drier ends.

My heart is as open as the sky.

  • I also have wavy/slighty curly hair and when I want to wear it curly (vs. flat ironing it) I dont touch it at all after getting out of the shower (no towel!!) I will then comb through it slightly with my fingers and then put my product in.I have the best luck by using a mousse and a spray gel (in minimal amounts). I then "plop" my hair. Its a technique I started doing about a year ago and it definitely cuts down on frizz and helps set more curls. Here is an article about it with info about how to do it:

  • One thing that's really helped me is to comb it when I'm still in the shower. I comb it at the end, turn the water off, flip my hair over and scrunch with my hands, lightly scrunch with the towel (no rubbing) and then get out. Something about the steam seems to help keep the frizz out.
