So I finally read Game of Thrones
I really enjoyed the first book and now I'm reading the second. But I'm finding that it's not really holding my interest. With the first, I couldn't wait to get back to it and find out what happens next but with this one I'm kind of like, eh, I'll read more later. Suddenly there are way too many characters and I can't keep track of them all.
Does it get better?

I don't know! I haven't seen the show yet - I wanted to read the books first. But I'm definitely ready to watch Season 1 now I think!
I did look at the pictures of the show's cast to see if they matched what I had envisioned for the characters. Some of them I thought were perfect, some not at all the same.
I can't answer either--I've been DVRing Season 2 and plan on catching up this weekend.
It's been years since I read the first 4 books, but the seasons stick relatively closely to the books. Season 2 is branching out a bit. A few of the characters are more developed (some of the non-POV characters - hard to do in the books since they aren't POV characters, easier to do on TV), and obviously most of them are aged up.
When I read the first novel I remember thinking "no way could this be a movie - maybe a mini series." But I could picture it on film. Maybe because Martin used to be a TV writer, I don't know. Anyway, I think they did it right, going with a TV series and on HBO.

Totally agree. It's also what's making this season of the show less interesting. I'm currently in the 4th, but I had to power through the 2nd. The 3rd is freaking amazing.
