Anyone have good house deodorizing advice?

I have two dogs and three cats in a 1000 sq ft house. We have no basement and my cats are all indoor. Thus, my house stinks, all the time. It's very embarrassing and I never have people over bc of it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to destink my house and keep it from stinking? We use feline pine litter, which is supposed to help, but when they poop, man it's bad. The litter boxes are in a closet in one of our back rooms which sort of keeps the smell at bay, but not really. Please help, im so embarassed and never want anyone here.

Re: Anyone have good house deodorizing advice?

  • What do you feed them? (Seriously, what you feed can have an impact)
  • Friskies dry and wet for the cats. Its all they'll eat. But, I mean the house just smells like animals, too, not just cat poo.

I fed my foster cats Wellness CORE dry and different brands of wet. Visitors couldn't tell I had cats in the house.

What other brands have you tried? This site rates cat foods by quality and price.

Otherwise, it's probably just a matter of covering up the smell, not preventing it. (Unless someone else has other suggestions I haven't thought of)

  • do you have carpets?

I use the Arm & Hammer carpet deodorizer and it does a pretty good job.  We only have 1 dog in a 1200 sq. ft. place.

Our chair and sofa have slipcovers and I wash them once a month or so.  Add in my DH is addicted to candles (long before we had the puppy) our place doesn't smell to dogish.

  • We have two dogs, three cats, feed grain free and vacuum once a week.  We've had people comment that our house is incredibly clean and they never would have guessed we have so many animals.  The food makes a HUGE difference.  At one point I had five cats in a 1200 sq foot house with no odor problem.

I would recommend wellness, taste of the wild, California naturals...friskies is one of the worst foods on the market and is linked to significant health issues like urinary blockages, hyperthyroid and kidney disease.  Our vet told us about half of her urinary blockage patients eat friskies and it's basically the first thing she asks.

  • Ditto the advice on changing the food! Several years ago I had 6 cats and one dog in my house and people could not believe it as my house did not smell at all! And I did not vacuum everyday (was working and going to school ft) However my friend has one dog and feeds it low quality food and his house stinks even though he cleans it and vacuums daily.

  • Good food will help a lot. We feed Taste of the Wild.

I also use baking soda on the carpets and let it sit for about 20-30 minutes before I vaccuum.

I'm going to ditto baking soda. I ought to buy stock in it. Honestly, it and vinegar are the two most powerful cleaning products you can use. I was skeptical forever, but I started and now I don't think I'd buy all the fancy stuff again.

Baking soda before you vaccuum, if you have tile/stone floors - sprinkle it and let it set before you mop it up. Set out a bowl of vinegar where it can't be reached by the animals, it'll soak up a lot of the smell too. It usually takes a day or two and then the vinegar evaporates (if it smells better, then no need... but if not, replace with more)

I also use arm and hammer spray foam for pets or any smell is good once in awhile before vaccuuming with the baking soda. You can get both for a $1 at Dollar Tree, so it's not expensive at all.

  • We have 4 cats and 3 dogs in an 880sqft house. When we were feeding a high quality kibble, I still could smell the cat boxes. Switching to a prey model raw diet has taken away their waste odor as well as any "dog" smell on the pups.

We have carpets and steam clean once a month, as well as vacuuming every other day or every day. Our house doesn't smell.
