Help! Dog Accident and Carpet

I haven't posted on the nest much, usually on the bump.  Hoping you ladies can offer advice/opinions.  Our dog ate a dead opossum (DH found the body and got rid of it after we realized what our sweet gal was up to).  She got sick Monday afternoon (#2, not vomit) in 3 places in our carpeted family room + 2 places upstairs.  Each spot is approximately 12"x12".  The carpet is all connected by a staircase (unharmed) and is the same throughout the entire upstairs.

We rented a Green Machine from Lowe's that night, which took out the staining.  We have spot cleaned to get the smell up, in the family room.  I can smell the cleaner in the family room, not the #2, so that is good.  But, I am afraid that could change.  I have to be honest and say that I haven't had as much time to devote to the upstairs from a spot clean perspective & haven't smelled too closely upstairs (what with work, a child and errands! :)).

DH would like to replace the carpet, which we can do, but would have to seam it across one 6 ft long span in our upstairs.  I am concerned that even though we would get the same carpet, the dye lot could be different & our existing carpet has been in for 4 years.

I think that we need to at least TRY to have someone come in and professionally clean it up.  Sorry for TMI, but this might be good to know...the #2 was thick and tar-ish, not watery.  So, although I don't doubt it got down to the pad, I am not sure of the damage now that we have cleaned it.

Thoughts?  What would you do?

Re: Help! Dog Accident and Carpet

  • You might cross-post on the Pets board for dog-specific advice. I got Nature's Miracle after reading about it (I think there). You want an enzymatic cleaner to really get everything out (there are others out there, I just went with that brand).

FWIW, I had a cleaning company clean all the carpets in our house when we bought it (ZeroRez). They did a great job and got up most of the stains that were there for who knows how long.

One (probably rust) stain that was left, on a whim I treated it with Nature's Miracle last week ... and some of it started to come up! I'm going to have to treat it several more times, but I can definitely tell some of it is coming out. Obviously something about this stain resisted the professional cleaning company but is responding to the enzymatic cleaner.

  • Thanks!  We have used ZeroRez before & liked them.  Might give the Nature's Miracle a whirl, too.

  • I love Arm & Hammer Pet Stain Remover.  For us, it's worked better than Nature's Miracle.

Baking Soda also helps remove the smell.  I put it on wet or dry and let it sit a good long time (like overnight) and then vacuum up.

  • I swear by Nature's Miracle...we use it on pet stains and have even used it on red wine stains. Works like a charm! With a mess that you think is in the carpet pad just pour it on until the stained area is wet. Wait til it's dry---will take a full day or so. You may need to reapply. I cover the area with a light covered towel or paper towel so we remember not to step on it.

You can buy it in a gallon size at Petco.

  • Also...have you called your vet? Your vet may recommend a white rice and boiled hamburger diet for a few days until your dog's tummy settles. That was what my vet recommended after my darling dog ate part of a rabbit : (

    Good luck!
