Have you visited? DID YOU LOVE IT?? We just returned from our vacation, started in Santa Monica and made our way up to San Francisco. My absolute favorite part of the trip was the Winchester house, it's so beautiful! Flipping weird, but geez. I spent the entire 2.5 hour tour drooling over the incredible carved hardware everywhere, the beautiful subway tiles, the thick molding and trim, the hand carved textured wallpaper... ::sigh::
And I've realized that Sarah Winchester and I are kindred spirits LOL, I haven't stopped messing with our home since I purchased it and I probably never will!

None of those photos are mine, I wasn't allowed to take pics inside thanks to the jerks who made Rose Red copying the house without permission :-/
Re: Winchester Mystery House?
We've never been, but we've heard great things about it from friends.
Did you drive up the coast? If I had known you were here, I would have waved to you when you drove through our area.
We did! And I thought about messaging you, "hi TBM, I love you on the internets and think we should do coffee" but I thought that'd be creepy LOL!
2nd best part of the trip? Taco Temple in Morro Bay. If that's anywhere near you, GO! Most delicious, giant taco I've ever eaten, for $4.50! Sooooo good. Oh, and Rue De Lillie Antiques in Summerland? I could live there. Overpriced for my midwest wallet but gorgeous and the owner has excellent taste! I love CA.... I love visiting CA I should say, but it's so packed! I'm so glad to be home in the boring ol' wide open Mitten state

I haven't been since I was really little and I remember being really creeped out on the tour. Any time that I am near San Jose, I talk about going back because I would love to see it through adult eyes. I'm glad you had fun on the tour.
ETA: I totally understand what you mean about feeling an connection to Sarah Winchester. My to-do list is constantly being added to and I live in an apartment that I can't paint.
I would not have been creeped out at all. I would have met you and maybe would have even brought a pup or four for you to meet, and showed you some great thrift and antique stores.
I am much closer to Summerland (where everything is overpriced imo...), than to Morro Bay.

We live about 5 miles from the Winchester Mystery House! I took my mom and little sister there a few years ago when they were visiting us here and we all thought it was really cool. Especially the Tiffany glass doors, DROOL!
I have a good friend who worked there as a tour guide throughout high school. Apparently the tour guides have to memorize the entire schpiel that they give on the tours, which is about an hour long if I'm remembering correctly. Crazy!
I'm glad you had such a good time on your CA trip. I truly love living where I do so I always like hearing that people appreciate it as much as I do when they come for a visit!
I grew up near there so I spent my childhood going often.
I once believed that many houses had stair cases that went nowhere (just up the the ceiling) and that several people has doors on their third floor that opened up to a 20 foot drop (like a bugs bunny cartoon!)
TOTALLY worth it, IMO! $35 gave us 2.5 hours of guided tour, then we wandered the grounds for another hour taking pictures outside. I'm a total decor nerd and that was my favorite part, but MH is enthralled with the history and he was really glad we'd done it too!

this is exactly my thoughts. We paid I want to say $ 54ish for the house tour and another area (can't remember) and its cool in regards to the architectural point of view but not if you are looking for creepy haunted house feel which is what we went for.
They say the night tour on halloween is much better.
I wouldn't make a "Trip to it" but if you are in the area its ok.
In all the years we've lived out here in the Bay Area, we have never gone and we have always wanted to go.
Did you drive up the coast? We got married in Big Sur and spent tons of time down there on Highway 1, Carmel and Monterey during that phase. So pretty!
