I am in need of some help with our sweet, sweet girl Miley. Miley has always had some house training issues (IE: we couldn't leave her in the house unattended without accidents). She knows where to potty, and when we're home asks to be let out and does wonderfully.
The rescue we got her from said they had the same situation, but recommended crate training. Miley LOVES her crate, she seriously hangs out in it at home when we're all here, it's "her" space.
She's been crated for 3 years and does great during the day (she's crated for about 6 hours with a 1 hour break at 3 hours when I come home for lunch so 3 hours, 1 hour break, 3 hours). We live in Arizona, and it's already well into the 100 degree weather, so leaving her outside isn't an option (nor one I have ever really cared for unless it's at her request- meaning she doesn't want to come back inside).
Recently though, She's started breaking out of her crate and having accidents all throughout the house. When we're home, she still hangs out in her crate. I'm puzzled. I've tried replacing the bedding in her crate, switching up toys in it, giving her a new chew bone, etc, things to occupy her in it. But nothing is working.
I really want her to be happy and am willing to do whatever will make her happy and feel secure- or nip whatever behavioral issues she's having for the recent change.
She's 4 years old- is it to late to work with a trainer? (maybe that's a really stupid question).
Any advice is appreciated.
Re: Help please, Dog regressing in house training.
I would definitely talk to your vet - an adult dog should be able to hold it 3-4 hours without any problems.
Since you say that she's breaking out of her crate it also makes me think that it might be an anxiety issue. Can you video take her one day to see how she acts before/during the breakout?
Thank you for the responses!
I'll be making he a vet appointment Monday morning, just to make sure. I can video record her during the day to see what's happening before she breaks out of her crate- that's a great idea, thank you.
When we first got her she had some major separation anxiety issues, so it's quite possible she's relapsing.
